Is Ruben Brown a legitimate future HOF candidate?

All,

I'd like to hear opinions as to whether he is a solid Future HOFer? He was elected to 8 consecutive pro bowls and 9 in total. Thoughts?

Good question, Greg. Tough to say at this point. There's just so many factors that come into play, including which OL retire with him and which are still waiting to get in when he's eligible. Look at Randall McDaniel and his 12 Pro Bowls. He wasn't even a finalist in his first year of eligibility. I gotta believe if he and Bruce Matthews were first-time eligibles in different years, that not only would McDaniel have been a finalist, he would have been voted in. There's a lot of OL with great resumes who've recently retired or are in the twilight of their careers, like Allen, Roaf, Shields, Ogden, etc. At the very least Brown might need 1 or 2 more Pro Bowls. Three might lock it up for him if he can play that long. I think another thing that hurts him is the absence of a great runner or QB behind him. That always helps.

Here's a name I never hear about when it comes to possible HOF induction: How about Jeff Saturday???
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Saturday has a real long way to go to even be thought of in my opinion.

At this point? No he is not. Yes, he has 9 Pro Bowls, but he also has ZERO 1st Team All-Pro selections in his 12 seasons. He had just missed out on that great Buffalo Bills run when he got there as a rookie, so last years Super Bowl was his only apperance. He doesn't really stake a claim in any great/HOF caliber RBs or QBs that played behind him either. He blocked for Kelly and Thurman for their last couple of years, but as I said this was after they had already been successful.

Now, if he happens to get chosen for another Pro Bowl, giving him 10 in his career, you've got to think he will get his shot. Not a first ballot guy, heck probably not even a 10th ballot guy, but at some point, every HOF eligible player in the history of the game with 10+ Pro Bowls has gotten in or will get in. Rod Woodson, Bruce Smith, Randall McDaniel, Will Shields, Willie Roaf and Jerry Rice all have 10+ and will all get in at some point. Every other player (18 of them) with 10 or more is already in...One thing that makes his case unique, is that every other 10+ Pro Bowl player was elected at LEAST twice as a 1st Team All-Pro. There are a few 9 Pro Bowl guys who had zero All-Pro's though.

He's getting close to the end of his career, so this season would seem to be the one that tells the final tale of his career. Figure if he misses the Pro Bowl this year, he probably never gets back in. You should have your answer by January!image

Ruben Brown is not the same caliber of any of the above referenced players. I guess if pro bowl accumulations means induction, then maybe.
