PayPal status "unclaimed" -

Recently paid for a card on FleaBay and the charge is completed on my end - but my PayPal account shows it as unclaimed and the eBay page says "this is pending payment through PayPal."

This rarely happens to me, so wondering if this means the person I paid hasn't logged in and accepted the $? Usually with PayPal transactions it shows up as "completed" almost immediately.

I had this happen to me once as the seller. I had changed email addresses but failed to do so on my Paypal account. I couldn't retrieve it and had to get the buyer to cancel his payment and resend to my new email address. Not sure if this is what happened to you but it could be. I would email the seller and see what is up.

  • more than likely the seller has a personal paypal account and you either paid by debit/credit card or the amount you sent put the seller over their receiving limit. they have to upgrade to a business paypal account to accept the payment. once they acccept the payment it will no longer be pending or unclaimed.

In my experience, one common reason a paypal payment can go 'unclaimed' is because the buyer has an unconfirmed Paypal address and the seller has set up his Paypal to require he manually 'accept' payment from unconfirmed addresses.

Cal Guy is probably right. He's probably got a PayPal Personal Account and you funded the transaction with a credit card.

Here's the deal with PayPal payments.

    Buyer to Seller

Personal Account to Personal Account - money is already sitting in the buyer's PP account
No fees, usually $400-$500 monthly receiving limit for the seller

Personal Account to Personal Account - buyer moves money from checking into PP account, they pays seller.
No fees, usually $400-$500 monthly receiving limit for the seller

Personal Account to Personal Account - buyer has zero balance or not enough to cover transaction, credit card covers the rest.
Seller cannot accept payment to a Personal Account unless he upgrades to a Business or Premier Account. If he does so, the Personal Account goes away and EVERY incoming payment from that day forward is subject to fees (2.9% + .30 per transaction) EVEN IF A CREDIT CARD IS NOT INVOLVED!

Personal Account to Business or Premier Account
No charge to buyer, seller pays whatever fee structure he's on (starts at 2.9% + .30 per transaction)

Business or Premier Account to Business or Premier Account
No charge to buyer, seller pays whatever fee structure he's on (starts at 2.9% + .30 per transaction)

Business or Premier Account to Personal Account
No charge to seller so long as payment from Business or Premier Account is NOT funded with a credit card (must use PayPal balance for entire transaction total.
  • having personal paypal accounts are great for off ebay deals. if you select the right options on the money request there is no $500 receiving limit per month.

Someone has to do this when sending you money and what are the right options? Was caught on this once when moving money from business to personal account - fortunately was right at end of month.

I always make sure to use the 'request money' that way I make sure the correct options are chosen. if the buyer uses the 'send money' you don't know what option they chose. to have it not go against your $500 receiving limit - when requesting money there is a choice for what type of transaction - I always use the 'goods other' option and that does not count against the $500. there may be other options you can use but that one works.

Thanks all for the info! He's "verified" in PayPal but it was for a larger amount so I'm sure it's some kind of PayPal-imposed limit he's reached. I've already emailed him and let him know it's cleared on my end, so I'm sure it will work out eventually. image

I had the same issue, found out the the "C" was missing in the .COM in my email address. Had to have the buyer cancel his payment and redo it to the correct email address.

Yep, in my case it should be all correct, the seller's info is verified by PayPal (as am I,) and it's gone through with a credit card from my end, now sitting in his account as "unclaimed" - once he upgrades his account it oughta go through all clear. One hopes. image

Yep, and it just went through. Thanks for the info everyone.

This is the most common reason for it from my experience. Recheck the listing and see if he mentions anything about unconfirmed addresses. He may go ahead and accept it, he may refuse it. Never hurts to send him an email.

In our case both of us have confirmed addys so it wasn't that, anyway. Whatever the limit was, it's taken care of now as it went through today. image
  • I never experinced that particular problem but it sounds like its not a big deal, it should probably clear anytime now. I would contact the seller and ask him to log into his paypal account and see whats going on in his end. No need to worry, everything should be fine!
  • I've noticed that, recently, for the first 5-10 minutes after I pay someone via PayPal (even eBay fees), it still shows as "unclaimed" on the history page. next time I log in, it has always gone through to "complete."
