Your best "Sell High" story

1996 I sold a Maddux Finest Gold refractor to a big dealer in Las Vegas for $800. I think it lists for $40 now and probably is sellable at $5. I also got $2200 for my only psa 9 Jordan rookie I ever had.

Anyone else?

  • One that comes to mind for me was the Roberto Alomar 1988 Score Traded PSA 10 that i sold for a little over $300 about 5 years ago. Not sure what they sell for now but i doubt it would go for that much

Heh, I bought one for $15 a few months ago.

I don't really have any super mega-profit stories, but immediatly after Bonds broke the record, some nm/mt Bonds rookies I had up on Ebay sold for PSA 9 prices. I used the proceeds to buy PSA 9s to replace them a few weeks later, and amazingly, had some money left over for a Starbucks trip. image

  • Nothing huge in terms of dollars but certainly in terms of profit margin. A 2003 Topps Chrome Griffey Jr Black Refractor #/199 purchased for $6 and sold several months later on eBay for nearly $70. Also several nice slab and flips. A fair amount of the profits get recycled back into the hobby.

  • 2007 Topps Jeter-paid for my 3 or so boxes until I started buying retail boxes and that ate up my profits.

Alex Gordon Cutout -bought it for $15 BIN. Used sellers pic and posted BIN for $45 sold in under a minute. One ebayer emailed me saying that was the fastest flip he has ever seen. Not something I normally do (sell when not in hand) so I was naturally worried the card would arrive but it did.

I had a lot of 2 or 4 Bill Ripken Black Box cards for sale. BIN was $2 or something. For some crazy reason a bidding war broke out and it ended over $30. I sooo thought it looked like I was shill bidding. Buyer paid. I felt bad and sent a few extra 1988 Topps Ellis Burks his/her way.

Nothing incredible but I sold a couple of Rickey Henderson rookies about summer of 1991 for $125 each. They were Ex+ maybe NM but probably not. Back in the day we called them "mint" cards. Ha, ha! Dealer I sold them to was asking about $200 for them after I sold to him.

In summer of '98 sold two '85 McGwire rookies. One was a PSA 6 and one was a PSA 7 (they were the first PSA cards I had graded). I got $200 or $225 for the pair.

I made 40X on my money on a '55 Bowman Russ Meyer. I picked it up on Ebay for $1.00 after talking to the seller who said he had it since he opened it from a pack back then. It looked good on the scan, and for a dollar I couldn't go wrong. I received it and sent it in to PSA as part of a free grade, and it came back a surprising 8. It sold for $40. That was about four years ago; I'm sure it would sell for a lot more now.

Way back when they sold off some of david hall's collection in some superior auctions I bought a few football cards. Some of them were psa 8 1948 football. They cost me $25 or less each, and the 3 that I sold added up to over $1000 on ebay.

Makes up for some of the ones I've bought and sent in that came back ? auth. It wouldn't be so bad if psa was wrong.

Bought a raw 1959 Topps #470 Musial 3000th hit card raw onb ebay for around $30, sent it to PSA and came back a PSA 9!! Sold it for almost $800. I still have a scan at home on my computer (probably shoulda' kept that one but made a hefty profit.)

I bought a lot of 3 1952 Topps cards that the description said was ex. The two cards I did not want were very off-center. The one I wanted looked perfect. I paid $33 for the lot. I sold the two off-center cards separately and made my $33 back. I sent the # 310 Metkovich in and got a PSA 7. Should have been a PSA 8. Anyway, the only 2 PSA 7's of that card I have seen on ebay have gone for over $1000. I still have the card.

sold 4 mcgwire rookies before grading was taking off in 98 and he was hot for $125 each. i had these from opening packs in 85 so i was not out very much and it helped in a time of need.

pulled a ewing psa 10 rookie from a pack from ebay (not bbce) about 3 yrs ago...very shocked when it hit $1010 (this is the most i've ever sold a single card). pack cost $160 and roughly $10 for grading.

    Thanks,

I took a risk on an autograph lot with no picture that was said to have over 100 autographs including signature cuts of Jackie Robinson and Roger Maris. I paid $300 for the lot and made a very simple cut signature card out of the Maris and Robinson and had them slabbed by PSA/DNA. I sold the Robinson (which was $100 to authenticate) for $670+ and still have the Maris. I later sold many of the other autographs in the lot for around $200-$250 in multiple combinations of singles and lots. So basically I spent $300 + $175 in authentication fees and made nearly $1000 and still kept the Maris. The Jackie Robinson is most certainly one of my biggest suprises ever.

Another story that actually occured this year - I bought a few 1967 Topps singles for $1 each at a local antique shop. I had five or so graded by PSA during the $5 each baseball special and received a grade of 9 on a Dick Williams card. It sold on eBay for roughly $450 as it was a low population in the set....even though SMR was $10. So I spent $1 + $5 to grade and made $450. Those are my best stories...

    Great stories guys, thanks...

Back in 2000, I sold a PSA 10 Terrell Davis SP rookie for $621, just a week after I bought it on Teletrade for $350 or so. They go for roughly $50 or $60 now.

  • I had 2 1998 SLU Mcgwires that happened to end less than an hour after he hit #62. One went for 108.00 and the other for 102.00. You could buy both of them now for less than 10.00.

  • 1958 Topps John Roseboro. I bought it raw at a local shop for five dollars. The minute I saw it, I knew it was an 8. Sure enough, in the next submission, it came back an 8, one of only 14 at the time. Sold on Ebay for $693.00.
  • pickup up a 55 topps podres GAI 7.5 for 125$ graded an 8 and sold for 1400 on the bay
  • Someone mentioned 89 score traded sets. I forgot about those. I bought almost a whole case (100) at a yard sale for about $4 per set. Sold them to SMCCI for $35 a set less than a week later.

I bought two 59 and 60 APBA games at a yard sale for $1 each. Both were unopened!!!! Got about $150 each on ebay. Kind of wish now I didnt sell them. That is a cool item. Who else has them unopened?

Back in 1993 Jeff Blake was the shiz in Cincinnati. His only card was 1992 Courtside Football. I was at a local mall and noticed the shop was selling them at 6.95 each. At the time the card booked for twenty cents. I asked him what he was paying and he replied- I will give you $10 per 3 cards. So, I placed an ad in SCD stating I would pay a buck per.....5x book lol. Everyday for about a month I'd come home from work and a package was waiting for me. I made almost 1000 dollars for Christmas that winter. Now the card is 20 cents again, and that mall shop is gone.

  • Reminds me of when Deion first signed with Dallas. His score rookie was booking for 10.00 I was doing a show that first weekend he played in Greenville, TX. I was buying them at 15 dollars each cash or 20.00 in trade. There was a big show in Dallas that weekend. When I had about 50 of them I dorve the 30 miles to Dallas and sold them for 45.00 cash. That was he weekend when a seller at the smaller show offered me 6 boxes of Magic The Gathering cards 3 Beta boxes and 3 Arabian Nights for 400.00 and I passed...UGH!!
