My New Man Crush - Charlie Gehringer

The one image that stood out after looking at Charles Conlon's book was that of Charlie Gehringer and how he looked EXACTLY the same over a 10 year span. This is the complete opposite of the pictures of Grover Cleveland and others that showed the ravages of time and abuse. The two photos are remarkable in that he hasn't changed a bit. The same slightly dead eyes and small mouth. As I started to research him and his career, I had no idea what a remarkable player he was, just that he always seemed to be giving the photographer the death ray. That, and he has a beautiful signature.

Since I tend to go after sets rather than players in this hobby of ours, I have never known what to do when the urge strikes to go after 1 (or 2 or 3) guys. I looked online and noticed that his auto can be had for relatively cheap and thought I would start there. I don't have the funds (or that deep of a crush) to try and assemble all his cards, but who knows. I saw some really nice Perez-Steele cards that he signed and may just go after different autos. I know Beckett has a listing for post-war cards that you can search for all the cards a certain player has. Is there something for the older cards where I can see what kind of undertaking I'm in for?

Yes he was quite a ball player. What always amazed me was his knack for not striking out. He never struck out more than 42 times a season. One of his best years was 1936 when he had 641 At Bats and only 13 Strikeouts. That year he also had 15 HR's, 116 RBI's, and a .354 batting average. But like I said, the stat that really amazes me was his 641 at bats with only 13 strikeouts.

    Kurt,

I have no idea where to find that information, but I've never gone after such a project. I'm sure someone has an idea.

So to help get on topic, is there a "by player" master checklist for pre-war players?

Brett Domue's site is exactly what you're looking for
    Pre War HOFers

Agreed on your choice of players-Gehringer is my favorite pre War player. It was said he said hello in spring training, goodbye on the last day of the season, and hit .340 in between. Just shut up and got the job done.

    Best...signature...ever!
  • <the stat that really amazes me was his 641 at bats with only 13 strikeouts.

    What about Joe Sewall's stats?

    608 AB with 4 strikeouts
    503 AB with 3 strikeouts

Total number of strikeouts in 14 season career = 114

Didn't think it would start so soon

    Another for the start

Very excited (if they are real) to get a HOF auto(s) for under $20. Now onto some of the flashier postcards with Autos. The cards themselves may have to wait.

Should I send 1 of these to Knuckles to do his magic?

By the way, thanks for the info on the list of cards.

Wonder how big his ears and nose are now since they say the nose and ears just keep growing until the end...ha ha

Already added two sigs and a 1980 signed Perez-Steele. Once again, thanks to everybody for their assistance, especially Tom Salem.
