picture posting question

finally picked up a scanner to post scans of some cards i want to sell.

one issue/slight prob regarding this pic posting thing is that the JPEG file is enormous.

what is the proper way to compress/reduce the pic file size?

thanks in advance

  • Upload the pictures into a hosting site like photobucket.com. This will allow you to link to that website and keep you from having to worry about file sizes.

  • First thing's first -- if your scanning software gives you a setting for DPI, choose 150 or 100. There's no reason to go any bigger. 150 is good enough to show off corners and edges too.

Nowadays, a lot of scanners are set to default to "print" resolutions, which means DPIs higher than 300 and HUGE FILE SIZES.

i will look into giving photobucket a try.

my scanner does have a DPI setting which i believe was set to the min of 100 but the file was still considerably large for some reason, around 165KB. i took a group scan of 4 cards so maybe that would explain why. but ideally would like to get KB size down to around 1/4 of that.

    photo bucket is free!
  • 165KB for a scan that shows off the card isn't unreasonable... especially if there are 4 cards in the image. MegaBytes maybe, but KiloBytes... nah.

i like free,i need a scanner, digital cameras are great for taking pics of my military patches and big stuff, but seems scanners do great on small things like buttons/coins and cards,i'll just have to shovel a a place here somwhere go put it!to put it

you're probably right. i guess when i see other various card scans typically in the 10-40KB range i figured there must be something wrong w/my pic file size.

I have all of my scanned images open directly into MS Paint so I can save them as a JPEG. I like it that way.
