A tale of two Bench sales...what's the deal?

1981 Fleer Bench sale #1

1981 Fleer Bench sale #2

Does something seem way off here? Not only does it look like a weak PSA 10, the card is sold for way more than it should have two months ago and then is re-sold by the same person who absolutely had to have it soon thereafter?

Its not the same card to me.

In the first auction which sold for over $300, there is no rough edge on the upper portion of the left border, and if you look at the red line that encircles the bench photo, the 2nd auction that sold for only $60+ has an imperfection on the top right portion of that red line that is not there on the scan of the card that sold for $300+

    Yes, that part was obvious.
  • two print dot imperfections on right border and one on surface to the right of Benchs' elbow appear on both cards....from all appearances, it would seem diamondsports victimized themselves by overbidding and then trying to resell with a terrible scan....that rough edge on the left is a bit curious tho image

There is something strange about that. The winner bidder of at $300+ on the first auction is the seller of the second auction at under $70. It appears that 4SC may have used a scan that didn't show a potential rough cut left edge (you can sort of see it on the 4SC pic, towards the bottom left edge). Maybe this "diamondsportscompany" purchased one of 4SC's inflated PSA 10s, wasn't happy with the condition, and decided to sell it. I don't know, but the card appears to be the same to me. The slab and insert are most certainly the same.

That's one of the problems with the PSA slab. If you shift the card over to the edge, you can effectivly hide edge issues due to the slots being on the front half of the slab. You don't have a problem like this on the back though.

Check this out. It's one of the McCoveys from my collection. Notice the bit of white showing down the lower right edge in the first pic? In the second pic, I slid the card over and made those edge issues "disappear."

Plus, I notice that the winner of the "low" auction was the underbidder in the "high" auction.

In the first auction, the guy with 679 feedback was the top bidder (at about $78 I guess with a nuclear bid of $317) until diamondsportscompany dropped $225, got outbid, then dropped their own nuke bid and won with $322. I guess diamondsportscompany really, really wanted that card.

679 feedback guy won the next auction w/o any crazy competition.

  • It is crazy how much people are willing to bid on cards, usually if you're patient you can get the card a lot cheaper. i try not to bid too early on an auction just to see what's going to happen and if i see someone i know that will bid whatever it takes to get a card i usually back away. also setting up snipes with you're max bid seems to work, a lot of the time you win for a lot less than the max, sometimes you don't win it but it keeps me from bidding crazy on certain cards. • I'm glad everyone found this thread entertaining. I agree that it's the same card but with the flaws exposed the second go round. I was the underbidder on the 2nd auction. I'm not one to pay a premium price for a GEM MINT card that appears to be overgraded. To me, a truly GEM MINT card should not have rough edges (maaaaybe if its an OPC).

It's funny that 4SC was the original seller. I hear horror stories like this with them all of the time, but I've never purchased from them. I can't say I plan to either.

  • I've bought some 9's and 10's from 4SC before... no problems, no complaints. The grades looked right to me.

But I've seen the scans other folks have posted of 4SC's overgraded cards, and I'm not about to deny that they seem to get loads of 9's into 10 holders, and 8's into 9's, and so on. Is it special treatment though, or perhaps the mathematical result of submitting hundreds or thousands of cards per submission?
