Card savers vs. top loaders?

I was wondering how most of the collectors on here store their cards. I always was a fan of a penny sleeve inside a top loader, but PSA suggests using cardsavers for mailing. I understand using the cardsavers for mailing, but as for storage, I have never been a fan. I feel if you put a card with a slightly frayed corner or an older card that may have slightly rounded corners in a card saver, that the tightness around the card while putting in and taking it out, can cause futher damage to the corners. Am I crazy? Any imput from the more experienced collectors out there?

I'm with you there , I don't like the way they are so tight inside of there , you can feel when you slide them in , it's just too tight .

If it went in Gem mint , it definitely isn't comming out in the same condition .

I prefer the screw down type , though more expensive I feel it is worth it .

Just for the fact that it has to be slid inside , I do not like them .
The binder pages are more loose , but I don't keep them in the binder , they're pinned to the wall .

I make a slit on one side of a penny sleeve so I don't do any damage to a corner while trying to put the card in the sleeve and then put it in a top loader... Card savers are flimsy and awkward when handling stacks of them imo..

Same here, I just notch a corner of my penny sleeve (actually snip it off with scissors), and I rarely have issues with the card snagging. As for the VS. debate, I'm a top loader man.

Edited to Add: I like to use team bags to keep dust and debris out of the top loaders as well.

  • Same here. Slit the penny-sleeve about a quarter of inch down one side and the card goes in clean, then it goes into a card-saver when shipping to PSA. Otherwise, it's penny-sleeve into a topholder for storage.
  • Well I guess I'm going against the grain here but I prefer a penny sleeve then card saver for sorage. I prefer Card Saver 2 over Ultra Pro and once I put a card in a card saver it usually stays there. I don't think I have ever damaged a card. If the cardsaver is new I always spread the cardsaver apart with my fingers before putting in the card. MY 2 cents.

<< <i>you can feel when you slide them in , it's just too tight >>

I was going to make a comment, but I will take the high road here....
  • I put cards into penny sleeves and then into a Card Saver. I use the slightly-larger penny sleeves (meant for patch cards), so that I don't have to worry about snagging corners on the sleeve. I've had some cards in Card Savers for years and haven't had any problems with messed up corners due to pressure. In fact, I just did a looksee on a random sampling of cards and they all pulled out pretty easily just by grabbing the top of the penny sleeve and gently pulling. All went back in with no fuss too.

For me, Card Savers seem to be comfortably tight... if that makes sense... (not trying to make a pun!)

I have some cards in top loaders too, but I prefer Card Savers. The cards don't shift around as much, especially if you're mailing them, and they take up less space and weigh less.

  • Thanks for all the input, I guess it just comes down to a matter of a personal opinion.
