What are the pros/cons of having an autographed card also graded?

If PSA does the grading as part of the fee, why wouldn't everyone do it?
I need help here.

My older stuff like...signed rookies of Vern Law, Bob Friend, Frank Thomas (pirates), will probably be slabbed and graded, even though the grades would be 3-6ish.

Because its not:
2) Autographed cards dated pre-1998 and/or those not directly from manufacturer must be sent through the Autographed Card Grading and Authentication Service (fee may vary depending on card value, see listed restrictions and requirements). Autographed cards dated 1998 and later (direct from manufacturer or previously authenticated by PSA/DNA) may be sent through any of the listed services (note restrictions and requirements for each level).
If you look at your submission form there is a choice With Grade//Without Grade.
Submitters have their own reasons why they don't want the card graded as well, some have been mentioned in this thread.
Even if you choose Without Grade, the card must be authentic as well as the autograph. A counterfeit, trimmed, recolored, etc. card would be rejected even if the autograph was authentic.

Can I have an example of what types of cards PSA will grade both the auto and the card for one fee?
This has been confusing me for quite some time and is the reason I dont send in a lot of cards.
Do you mean you will grade the autograph on a 2001 Topps Archives autograph?
I know if I send in a Sport Thrills autographed Carl Hubbell, that wouldnt fall under being able to be graded and authenticated by PSA would it?
THANKS,
DANNY

Maybe I misunderstood the title and question in this thread. I believe they were asking why a person would choose not to also have the card numerically graded when sending it in.
If the question is do we offer a service level to authenticate an autograph, grade the card and grade the autograph, we do not offer one service encompassing all three at this time. There are ways to have this done combining PSA and PSA/DNA services. The auto grade would not show on the flip but you would get a letter through PSA/DNA showing a picture of the card in the slab and detailing the auto grade.

I think this is confusing to people because there are different options offered through PSA and PSA/DNA.
Options for licensed autographed cards through PSA:
If a card is issued with an autograph from the manufacturer dated 1998 to present, you can submit this under any service level the card applies to based on value and desired turnaround time. It does not need to go through autograph authentication and we make no comment about the autograph.
If the card has an autograph issued by the manufacturer prior to 1998 or it was signed in person, the card will need to be sent in using the AUTOGRAPHED CARD GRADING AND AUTHENTICATION Service. The fees begin at $20 per card and go up depending on the value of the card and/or autograph. With this service the autograph will be looked at for authenticity as will the card. As for assigning a numeric grade as to the condition of the card, you have the choice with or without grade.
PSA does not grade autographs. If you would like to have the autograph graded as well you will need to utilize PSA/DNA services in addition to PSA services.
When holdered these will have the traditional red PSA label.
Options for licensed autographed cards through PSA/DNA:
Sometimes people go this route if they:
1. Only want the autograph authenticated and graded.
2. Do not care for PSA to make any comment on the card or if they know there is an issue with that card such as trimming.
PSA/DNA does not grade cards so no comment is being made about the card. It is not looked at by PSA card graders.
If holdered, these will have a blue PSA/DNA label.
Fees for this service are based on the authentication fees for the person who signed the card. You can view fee schedules, encapsulation fees and autograph grading fees on the PSA/DNA website. www.psadna.com.
Non licensed cards, cuts, etc.
The items can only go through PSA/DNA and the options are available as stated above with licensed cards.
Whew, this is really easier to go over in person or on the phone but hopefully this will clear up some of the confusion. If you have specific issues as it pertains to your item, I would suggest calling customer service.

Not sure if you can answer this for PSADNA or not, but what size slabs are available for slabbing of cuts/postcards/homemade signature cuts/checks etc.?
Thanks

CURRENT PSA HOLDER SIZES
Below are the current approximate card holder sizes. These are the maximum sizes; there are many inserts available to provide a more custom fit for smaller cards. Please note that all cards and tickets vary in size. Occasionally, a card or ticket will not fit into the designated holder. If this occurs it will be placed in a Mylar sleeve and put in an oversized holder. There are also card/ticket issues that PSA's current holders cannot accommodate, but may be holdered in the future as new holders are introduced.
Standard - 2 11/16" x 3 13/16"
Tall Boy - 3 1/2" x 5 1/ 6"
Supersized (Ticket) - 3 5/8" x 7 1/2"
Supersized (Check) - 4 1/4" x 10"
T-3 Holder - 5 3/4" x 8"

Don't quote me, but I think they would still authenticate the auto, just not slab it.

No, you would not get a voucher if the card were trimmed.
If a card is in a holder with a red flip, we are stating that card is authentic as well as the autograph.
If you know the cards have been trimmed you need to use a PSA/DNA option.
