OT-Who are the worst football announcers?

Currently, I feel it has to be a toss-up between Theisman and Dierdorf. Among all timers, O.J.. Karras, and Unitas were hopeless.

In the college ranks, Mike Patrick is clueless.

    I agree about Mussburger. I like Kornheiser on PTI, but I have not seen him much on MNF.

    markj, your list is pretty much exactly the same as mine. Listening to Dierdorf meander on about god-knows-what for 7 plays was truly painful. As much as I liked him as a player, Steve Tasker is god-awful too. I would also throw Gifford towards the end of his MNF career. I will say I liked Ditka last night. All he cared about is what was going on in the game, and anytime either of the other Mike's would go off on a tangent, Ditka brought it back. He still really knows what's going on in the field.

    I alos don't understand why they won't use good announcers from other sports. I mean, if you can do a good job at a basketball game, why wouldn't you be able to bring the same talents to a football game? Needless to say, we need more Gus Johnson in our lives.

    I actually miss the old Sunday night football crew of McGuire, Patrick (mostly) and Theismann. As much as I disliked listening to Theismann talk, I really like McGuire and Patrick. I miss Summerall too. Madden drives me nuts but if you've ever had the chance to watch the "nobody is watching the Vikings anyway" crew of Curt Menefee and Brian something or other, you're missing out. Whew, those guys are fantas....er wait.

    Kornheiser is good on PTI, but not a good football announcer, I can't stand theisman either. I actually enjoyed MIke Dikta, Greenberg and Golic last night.

    Madden is the worst of the worst.

    Ditka was good last night he still has that football eye, called a play a run play while the other two were talking about receivers down field then Leinart handed off to edge.

    Who are the worst football announcers?

    This is one of those subjects that gets my goat. Too many announcers seem like they are trying to play head coach to show you how smart they are by describing the strategy they would be using. I've got news for them - it's not about THEM. It's about the game. It's also not about assessing every player who just made one good play as being "one of the greatest" or whatever accolades they come up with - until the next play runs.

    Most of the time I watch without the sound turned on - or have the radio broadcast going if it's on the radio.

    I can't believe no one mentioned Bryant Gumbel yet!!! He announced some games for the NFL Network last year, and the first in particular was an abomination. I normally don't even care who's calling the game, but he was SO bad that I had to hit the mute button. He got a little better as the year went on, but he's still far from good.

    Man . . . his name escapes me right now , but he's a comedian that was doing Monday night football a few seasons ago ??

    Nothing like all these complex little sayings this guy used to put in there after every play , complete nonsense .

    Bryant Gumbel is the worst I've ever heard. It sounds like he's recording a children's lullaby for idiots.

    Kornheiser is unlistenable because he makes everything an argument. And he focuses so much on the periphery... WTF cares about Chad Johnson's celibration plans?

    I like Madden. He's like your senile grandpa who gives you candy, and then 5 minutes later gives you more because he forgot he gave you the first piece. He's Harry Carey.

    Oh yea, I can't stand Madden. When the redskins on on Mondays (now sundays), I mute the TV and turn on the radio broadcast. Even with the radio being ~3 seconds behind, its still better than Madden.

    I think McCarver once said something to the effect that a contact hitter must make contact in order to get basehits. That's good to know Tim.

    College football - Bill Curry, hands down.

    NFL - Anyone remember Dan Jiggetts? The absolute worst.

    Mike Patrick and that Maguire guy don't do much for me either.

    Like the other poster, I don't usually have the volume on. Mute for me.
