Ripped 89 Upper Deck Box today...

First of all, it was the craziest box I've ever opened of any brand ever...

I pulled a Palmeiro in my first 10 packs...pulled 16 all together...
2 Sheffield Rookies
1 Biggio
1 Smoltz
1 Bonds
Gwynn, Ripken, etc...and 1 very off centered Griffey...until....
my second to last pack...another Griffey!
Then my very last pack....another Griffey!! Possible 10 but slightly off centered in the front, so probably a 9.
3 Griffeys total in one box though...freakin' awesome!!

I got a total of 11 Griffeys in 5 boxes back in the day.

I remember opening one box of high numbers and pulling about 15 to 20 of the same guy....Whitehurst, I believe. And, another 10 to 15 of someone else.

excellent. I got 2 really nice ones and one OC one as well!

did you get the box from BBEXCH?

I might have to snag another box....
  • Told ya the Hi number boxes don't alway produce Griffeys BUT when they do it is possible to get several in the same box.

back when they first came out, at a local shop (no longer there of course) a kid pulled 2 griffeys in one pack they had a picture of it and i think it made the local paper in an advertisment...

    good box

My best was 6 Griffeys in one box. Once I even got two in one pack (the top card and the bottom card). However, I opened quite a few boxes with none. It all evened out. But....6 in one box is pretty sweet.

Anything more than 2 is NICE.

Sounds like you had a winner of a box!! image

  • Whats the ratio of Griffeys in the high number boxes vs the low number. How many on average are in each?
  • would you all have all 3 griffeys graded even though 2 of them won't grade a 10 for sure? I know 1 may even get a 7 b/c it's so OC. The other a 9 and 1 a possible 10. Or should I just send the possible 10?

Once I opened an '89 UD box, and every card was a Griffey. There were extra Griffeys used to separate the packs in the box, and the box was actually made of more Griffey cards. Yeah, that's how I remember it. Yep. Sure do. image
  • you must have been on some good stuff...
  • can a card be graded a 10 from this set if the foil is damaged on the back?

Now that someone mentioned it, I pulled two Griffeys in one pack too! One was sealed with the end of the pack though and was basically worthless. But, the other was nicely centered.

I can't believe that Griffey Jr PSA 10s go for $200-250 nowadays. Weren't they over a couple of grand at one point?

That's one card where supply will never meet demand though.

Not counting set registries and "the usual suspects," we're talking about a card that changed the direction of the hobby, that also happens to depict a future hall of famer and gracious person in a very classy pose. For a modern card, the 89 UD Griffey Jr hits on all cylinders. I have one on my collection that probably wouldn't grade well because the hologram is chipped and there looks to be an odd dent in that spot, but I'm glad to have one nonetheless. Every collection should have an 89 UD Griffey Jr in it.
Nolan Ryan & Edgar Martinez are my favorite players...

  • i understand the sentiment of the card, but it is still one ridiculously over-produced and over-valued item..... 1 MILLION of EACH card produced BEFORE the factory sets......but yes, every collector should (and probably does) have one. still very hard to find in pristine condition (50/50 all around, front/back, surface, PERFECTLY centered and INTACT hologram....)

  • I've seen some PSA 10's with imperfect holograms.

In response to the other question, I have some eBay printouts circa 1999 when they were selling for $1500+

Then again, Michael Jordan 86 Fleer rookies were bringing 25-30 thousand !!!

I bought a box on ebay a few years back. If I remember correctly it yielded 4 Griffs one of which was perfect.

This was back when I sub'd to BGS so off it went and came back an 8! No way that card was an 8.

I cracked it and sent it to PSA. It came back a 10.

That happened to me as well. One griffey on the front, one on the back. Too bad they didn't make cellos! They were both OC. One graded 7 one graded 9 (OC).

  • I remember when I first started reading about card grading and got on these boards that a PSA 10 1989 UD Griffey was $1750. Wow, those heady days of yesteryear....
Just glad to be here with everyone.
  • i seem to recall selling my PSA9 griffey for several hundred. that was probably 1998...
