Dear Mr. Miles (My very, very limited 2007 Topps A&G auto TTM project)

I'm scaling back a bit for this year's Topps Allen & Ginter set and contenting myself by seeking autographs only from the Negro League players featured. I believe there is a grand total of four. If so, I'm at 25 percent completion with my first return today from John "Mule" Miles... and it's a very enjoyable return with a handwritten letter and extra signed card thrown in.

"You never miss, what you never had."

In my opinion Mr. Miles has much more than some present day players could ever hope to have.

Thanks for continuing to share your passion for our hobby with us. Good luck with the other three.

What an awesome letter you received. For a man who has to be over 80 years old now, he has beautiful handwriting and a great signature. Awesome!

That letter was one of the greatest replies I have ever seen. What a class act and wonderful person.

Would I be out of place to ask you to pm me his address? I would be thrilled to have the autograph of such a great guy.
    Looking for Carl Willey items.

Yeah, I do love the letter. You know, out of the 100+ autos I've received through the mail for the 2006 set, none of those have come back with a handwritten response (except from Xavier Nady's father to tell me I'd sent my card to the wrong Xavier Nady). So, it's very special to me for that reason as well.

  • I cannot remember which player from the Negro leagues I met a couple of years ago. It was at a local mall show everyone seemed to be passing him by paying no attention. I approached him and we ended up talking for about a hour. I never thought to ask for an autograph nor can I remember his name for the life of me. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had collecting. I outranks my talk with Joe Adcok right before he passed.

Dang can't say his last name here???

i had a 100+ negro leage autos from guys addresses they put in baseball cards-the mag years ago and got rid of em for next to nothing, be worth a forture now, most are dead i expect, i remember i got a 2 page letter from one guy that was 91 in 1986!!very cool to see some negro league player finaly getting some respect they deserve -they had alot more integrity than the high priced belhops that are out there today by far, they played because they loved the game, not for $ and endorsments like they do today-they prob did well to get paid at all if the truth be told!i know it sure wasnt much compared to what they had to endure- i want to start getting the alive negro league player allover again "sigh" and send em off to garret-knuckkles to make cut sigs cards out of like he did with the man that had the hundreds of old time hocley players he had garrett do, those are smithsonian quility!

Hey, hey! A nice sig from Mr. Glenn. This one was quick. There and back in just 6 days. I'm including a scan of the back of the card because I suppose there are others like me who hadn't heard of him before.

  • Three down, one to go... though I'll probably send Scott another card. This one had a rough day. In addition to the smudging, there's a huge vertical crease right down the middle.
