1961 Joe Gibbon

Why is this card so expensive in PSA 8? Twelve of them have been sold in the past year or so (per VCP), and they go for $500+. One went for nearly $900, and the most recent one sold for more than $1100. There are seven cards in 61 with an equal or lower pop (Terry, Houk, Dressen, Goodman, Blasingame, Nichols, and WS Gm 1). I might have missed some. The WS card has a much lower pop.

Gibbon routinely goes for much more than all but the WS card. It is one of 4 cards that I need in 8 to have the entire set in 8 or better, but I can not bring myself to pay the going rate.

All the others you mentioned are not high numbers. It's considered the toughest of the highs, so that's why it brings ridiculous prices. If you can get one for $500-600, that's lower than what I've seen them priced at shows.

  • Mark, I assume Gibbon goes for so much due to his long-standing rep as a tough card and that his population is probably perceived as a "hard count" where anything with a ghost of a chance for PSA 8 has already been submitted. Further, Gibbon could be a member of at least 3 popular sets/subsets: 1961 High Numbers, 1961 Pirates Team set, and of course the '61 set itself, so his pop is spread thin across those set lines. (As you know, there are a lot of complete sets on the registry for 1961, as well as for the Pirates team. There must be a few sets out there which are complete but not on the registry for some reason. Take those out and the pickings are slim. Also, if a dozen have sold in the last year, how do we know if they are all different? Could be a much smaller number of actual cards.

The pop for Gibbon is still higher than the other cards I mentioned. We have an obscure player selling for more than the manager of one of the all-time favorite teams, even though the mgr has a lower pop. I guess I will spring for it one day, but for now I will be content with my seven.

I agree it's got the Herman Wehmeir 1952 Topps feel to it. The Dick Stuart is almost just as tough but it sells for like 60 bucks. I collect the 61 Pirates set and need it and the WS card for my 8 set. I have the Stuart in an 7. I say it's all about patience, pop will go up over time. Eventually it will come down in price as like you say its a nobody card that's only worth over 80 bucks in a PSA 8 or higher holder. Pretty limited value there. I can get a PSA 6 Clemente RC or Aaron RC for what the card sometimes brings.

Isn't the Jim Gentile card from the 61 Topps set also hard to get high grades on? And in turn it goes for a premium?

Better yet, ask him what he wants for his 1958 Mike McCormick.
