Decisions, Decisions, 88 Donruss or 88 Fleer?

Guy I work with got 2 packs of each at a card show he went to (to get Rick Middleton's auto) over the weekend.
He gave me all 4 packs - what should I open first?

I'd say buy the sets and forget about the packs. image

Seriously, I like 1988 Fleer better, but that's not saying a lot, as with the exception of 1988 Score, the 1988 designs were rather weak IMO. Anyhoo, start with 1988 Fleer; there's a 1:22 chance there's a Tom Glavine rookie hiding inside! image He just clinched the Hall of Fame you know.

You scored a pair of Dave Dravecky's in those packs! A memorable SF Giant he was.

Came over in a midseason 1987 trade, and picked up 3 shutouts before the end of regular season, then pitched a shutout against the Cards in game 2 (?) the NLCS, and gave up only 1 run in another game, but sadly the Giants were on the recieving end of a shutout on that game. image

Cancer took his career, and his pitching arm, away from him in 1989.

I'm still very much in that "rated rookie = giddy" phase. Not sure it will ever go away!

So...zep......uh.......how good looking is that Ron Gant? 10 worthy, maybe? image

i always found it funny that the most mediocre players become position coaches in baseball...the sox alone have had Al Nipper, John Farrell, and Dave Magadan as pitching/hitting coaches...
  • EstilEstil Posts: 7,225 ✭✭✭✭✭
Maybe because the superstars make enough $$$ to be able to retire in just one or two years and are not as likely to need the coaching gig? Of course, you still have some (Mattingly) who were superstars (and IMO, came up just one championship season (1994 or 1996) short of easy HOF induction) and want to coach/manage. Big difference b/t need and want obviously.
