SMR $850.00; Bid $1025.00 and Still Lost

I realize SMR is only a guide, but I really thought I would win the auction. SMR was $850.00. I bid $1025.00 and still lost. Argh!

P.S. It would probably only add to my frustration, but I wish I could find out what the winning bidder's proxy bid was. But I guess it is similar to the Bar Exam (where you get a nice letter simply stating that you passed or failed), e.g. Do you really want to know that you just barely passed? Or in this case, do I really want to know that his proxy bid was $1.00 higher than mine?

    Don't listen to SMR.

There are many times it is off by a factor of 100%, 200%, 300% or more.

If you want more relevant pricing data, I would suggest subscribing to one of the online pricing services. I am very happy with VCP
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Don't feel too bad. I lost a bid last night bidding 586% over SMR. Vintage low pops have this happen every once in a while. I've seen one on EBay go for over 14 times SMR.

If it is a low pop you might be better off letting more become graded effectively bringing prices down. If it was something undervalued just rising in price (prewar stuff, Aaron RCs) then you might have to bid more aggressively.

  • I assume you are talking about the 1933 Goudey Hack Wilson PSA 7 that closed last night. I am fairly certain that your high bid was dominated by the winning bidder. If you check this bidder's history he has bought over $60k worth of 1933 Goudey's THIS MONTH alone. You never had a chance. He buys everything from $13,500 PSA 9 Carl Hubbel cards to $5 Nap Lajoie reprints. Once this buying spree gets finished you will have a better chance.

On the issue of SMR, If I buy a card I know I might flip later I try and stay in the SMR range due to dealers using it for all of their pricing.

Yup. It was the Hack Wilson. My "records" showed that the last PSA 7 sold for $1052.00. So I figured $1025.00 was a respectable bid. But yes, $1100? $1200? $1500. All probably no good he probably said, "hey a Hack Wilson PSA 7. What's? SMR. Oh? $850.00. I'll toss in a proxy of ... hmmm ... $2000. Who in their right mind would top that?"
