Where do people get raw 50s-70s cards to submit to PSA?

Unopened packs? Raw cards (gasp) on Ebay? Card shows or shops? I'm just wondering where newly graded vintage PSA cards, especially the 8s, 9s, and 10s come from...

I buy them at local card shows. once in awhile I'll get a trimmed card but I have fun looking and buying nice cards so it's worth the risk to me.

I asked the same question a few months back, I was asking how the big submitters 4SC, DSL get all their raw cards...

    Some of the responses were:
they buy up complete raw sets/collections from individuals.
    Vending and wax breaks..

You would think that overtime, vintage high grade raw cards will no longer be available.

Great question. I travel the tri-state area for small shops, shows, & flea markets. What is really disturbing is that its getting tougher and tougher to find nice high grade stuff. In addition, the small shows and auctions that I attend are now being honored by the presence of some of the top dealers that in the past, would never step foot in the door. It makes me wonder what the next five years will be like if you collect and grade high end 50's and 60's.

    1. I submit cards I bought raw years ago.
    2. I do buy raw in ebay. It is hit and miss, but I have done OK.

every year, shortly before Christmas, i hang my stocking by the chimney with care in hopes that Jolly St. Nick will drop a list of names and phone numbers inside for me to contact......and every year, shortly after Christmas, i dig through my stuff and start to prepare another submission for PSA; same cards, same guys, same stats, same darn off-centering and rounded corners.....

THIS is why i don't believe in Santa image

Trust me there are alot of raw cards still available. I went to a 15 table show Saturday and maybe saw 15 graded cards, there were thousands of ungraded 50s and 60s cards out there, if I had had more money I would have made like a bandit.

When I saw the registry taking off, I bought all I could. Still have tons from the late 60's early 70's that world grade 8, 9 and 10

You can still find nm-mt '60's commons at shows, and you can even find them online through reputable dealers. Problem is, since so many sell for around $10-$12, they're not really worth submitting after you pay for the grading costs (especially considering that some of them will inevitably get 7's). Finding nm-mt+ low pop commons or hall of famers is a bit more tricky.

That is exactly what 4SC does. Not sure about DSL.

Local shows and large regional and national shows can be great sources as well. There are still people who hate the idea of grading and will give you an earful if you talk about it with them. however, there is a great divide between those people as well. Half will way overgrade their cards (hence the reason they hate grading) and try to charge you a premium for an otherwise Ex - NM card or will even try to charge you graded prices. I always love that one. Then there's the people who will just balk and whine about grading as you look closely at the cards. Be prepared for that if you ever pull out a micro-ruler or a loupe. image

    Same here.

I also have tried the set purchase and break up, but that is certainly hit or miss as well.

If you are looking to make money you may want to find a new investment source with a better return. If its for the hobby sake, you should enjoy the chase and relish in your wins/finds and chalk up the losses to a lesson learned.

Not going to tell but if you know me, the place would be obvious (the same place I've buying raws for 4 years now). It becomes even more fun now since I don't have to play the overrpiced submission game.

People like me. I have TONS of old 50s and 70s cards that I've never submitted to PSA because I collected pretty hardcore back in the late 80's and early 90's, then completely let my collection just sit for 15 years, and now I'm back into it again. Hence, PSA is a "new" thing to me, and I've never submitted a single card. Once I do, there'll be some new "nice" cards in the pop.

Like some of the guys stories i have read on the board, i had a paper route(as a kid) in the early 70's. I was at K-Mart everyday and my local liquor store that stocked baseball cards. The most important thing is we did not damage cards but colelcted the cards. When i was in construction in the mid 80's i purchased 3 unopened OPC baseball boxes from my local pawn shop which i still have. 1 from 1973 and 2 from 1975. Someday i will send in the packs.

My friend came back from the National with some unbelievable "ungraded" stuff. Including a MINT 1936 S&S Game set with board and pieces. Amazing as to what is still floating around out there!!
  • Thanks for all the replies, guys. I am a collector and still submitting my own stuff (have had about 4 big subs graded so far, maybe another 6-10 or so to go...) that has been sitting around for 15+ years, but wondering what options are out there for buying raw stuff after I get all of my own items graded and maybe want to try to complete some player sets or possibly some older football or hockey sets. Just wondering what alternatives there are to buying everything already graded, so the replies are very much appreciated.
