Should I pay for insurance for a card on eBay when I pay through PayPal?

I bought a pretty high end card for over $500 on eBay. I am going to pay with PayPal, and shipping is $4.00 they want $7.00 for insurance, but shouldn't paypal cover me on this? Should I pay it or is it their responsibility to get the item to me safely knowing I am using PayPal? What do you guys think?

Paypal does cover you for loss, but even so, I usually will pay for insurance anyway. I guess I'm just old school that way, but I feel more comfortable spending a few more bucks to insure the package.

  • so, is that $7 total or $11? if it's $7 total, i'd buy the insurance.

    Total of $11 ($4 S&H and $7 Ins.)
I will probably pay it, but usually when I sell an Item that is high end I price the insurance with the s&h and make it mandatory.
  • You obviously want the card bad enough to spend $500.00, so I would definitely insure it. Is it graded? If so, what if it arrives, but the case is cracked? You'll wish you spent the extra $7.00!!!
  • the seller has the risk, not you. if the card arrives damaged (or never arrives), regardless of what he says, he's on the hook. If he's smart, he's gonna insure it anyway. He's just hoping he doesn't have to pay for it.

i always use credit card and paypal and never purchase insurance if optional.
  • I'm probably wrong, but I didn't think PayPal would do anything for a cracked case that occured during shipping if insurance was on option and declined.

Not to be too me too, but I agree with these guys, seller's responsibility. As a seller, I understand this, and if it's high dollar, I make insurance mandatory.

Does the auction show a paypal guarantee (I think it's under the seller's details)? If not, then if they can't recoup from the seller, you're screwed even if you win the claim.

You'd be covered with a credit card, though.

Then why doesn't Ebay crack down on sellers fooling customers that it's the customer's loss if they don't get insurance? image

they can say what they want in the listing. it doesn't mean anything though if there is paypal claim.

I am sure ebay has enough to do than to start pulling those listings.

Its kind of like the signs in a parking lot that say "we are not responsible for damage caused by carts"

That is incorrect, if they are negligent in any way, they are. They just figure by putting that up there, you wont pursue any legal action against them..same case here.

I went ahead and gave him his $7.00 for insurance. I remember I sold a high end card a few years ago and listed the shipping as like $2.00 as thats what I charged for singles or $15 for registered insured. I just forgot to remove the $2.00 option. The auction ends for $1500+ and the high bidder with great feedback paid the $2 charge only. I asked if he wanted insurance, he said no that he had never had a problem with a ebay with good feedback like mine. He paid with Paypal so needless to say I had to shell out $15 for registered mail on that one.

Sorry in advance if this is an incoherent rambling but I'm posting this without any coffee image

I purchased a sub $20 item via PayPal and never received it. 3 weeks went by and I inquired the status with the Seller, who provided delivery confirmation (NO signature confirmation). He suggested I go to the PO to find out what was going on. PO said the package must have been lost.. Went back to the Seller and he told me that I should have purchased insurance. Tried to be reasonable with him and asked for a refund, he told me to pound sand.

Opened a PayPal dispute and provided our correspondence, to which he replied, again, that I should have purchased insurance.

    PayPal sided with him.

Going forward on high $ items, I'm purchasing insurance unless the Seller specifically states insurance is included.

  • I agree with Stown...if insurance is offered and you as a buyer don't take it....you won't get the paypal claim from my own experiences. From cases I've been involved in, as long as the seller lists insurance as an option in the auction then he is covered if you don't take it...its only when "insurance not offered" that you are covered anyway.

I could be wrong...but thats again what I've found to be the case....anything over $200 I definately pick up the insurance if its offered to me.

What is the actual USPS insurance rate on $500? $7.00 seems a little steep, but I don't know for sure.
  • Insurance on $500 is $6.40.

Wow, is that right? I guess the blanket statement that Paypal will always side with the buyer is not always true.

  • if seller can prove the item was received, it makes it MUCH harder on the buyer to win the paypal claim.
  • As long as the seller ships with delivery confirmation and the post office shows it delivered paypal will rule in the sellers favor. if the post office never shows delivery even though seller bought the confirmation i believe the seller would have a problem. just from what i've seen in my experiences. as a seller i always use delievery confirmation on cards over $20 , but i'm always nervous when it's expensive and the buyer does'nt opt for insurance.
