OT: Red Sox on their way to a '78 style collapse.

The Yankees have played out of their minds against mostly weak and struggling (i.e. Cleveland) opponents, but when Boston gives games away like today, I smell a collapse coming. I think the collapse watch went to a collapse warning today. And it's sad to see because I hate NYY.

Oh yes, I can see it comming. I've been a lifelong Sox fan and this is worrying me. I have a standing bet with a Yankee fan friend, the team that finishs higher, the other person has to wear the other teams hat for a week. I am sick of wearing a NYY hat, I get the willies just thinking about it. It's almost cruel and unusual punishment. image

The Gagne trade was a waste so far, I didn't like it from the start. It's not just him, it seems they are all not playing up to standards right now. But they gave away a great young arm and a promising outfielder for a washed up reliever. Flashes of Dan Duquette are comming back.

Ahhh, it will be settled head-to-head. The Yanks just had their easiest schedule month, now are starting their toughest. Still will boil down to head-to-head.

    Let the better team win.

  • I cant stand the yankees either, but at 10 to 1 odds in Vegas to win the series, I had to lay a 100 on them. Go Yanks...............
  • why cant PapSmear pitch back to back days? His his poor widdle shoulder so freakin tender? I am not a sox fan by any stretch, but what a pussiboy~!

Did the 78 Yanks play .800 ball after the all star break?
  • calaban7calaban7 Posts: 3,039 ✭✭✭✭
In 1978 the Yanks were 46-38 at the all-star break . They finished at 100-63 meaning they went 54-25 down the stretch. I think that comes out to .684. Not bad for any team.

heh I'd like to see YOU go out there and compete in a game there guy. Then, I'd like to see you say something like this to Papelbon's face, just to see just how badly you'd get annihilated.

As far as game tactics go, why would you waste your closer in a tie game at home? The game goes to the 11th, or 12th, who exactly is going to close it then? If Gagne doesn't allow that HR, then it's a moot point and the sox win the game.

Actually, he was warming up in the pen today to come in if the Sox took the lead, even though he pitched last night. No sense risking blowing his shoulder out again from overuse like they did last year, they will need him strong if they want to go deep into the playoffs.

pretty soon they are going to have to worry about making the playoffs.

and PapSmear IS fragile. geez. they have relied heavily on others to get them some tough stretches.

Well, would you rather settle for the wild card and win another World Series title or win the division and get beat in the playoffs? This question is for both Sox and Yanks fans.

Not a fan of either team, but any and every team wants to win both their division and the world series. Of course you want tto win your division, remember the yanks are what tied for the division lead now? So the loser of the division may not make the playoffs this year. Not a very good question, even though it was semi-rhetorical.

easy with all the "collapse" talk...the Yanks have Detroit 8 games in the next couple of weeks, while the Sox get to beat up on Tampa Bay 5 more times. Granted Detroit is struggling big-time, but something tells me they will step up when it counts - even if they split 4-4, the Sox should gain ground during that stretch....If the lead is any more than 5 games when the Sox get to the Stadium at the end of August, this race is over....with 6 games head-to-head, nothing so far this season suggests that either team will go 5-1, and 4-2 in the Yanks favor won't be enough.

and whoever said Gabbard is a great young arm is severely overestimating that guy's ability, not to mention the fact that they have zero room for him in the future when their minor leaguers become major league ready...that trade made good sense if for nothing else, the Yanks didn't get Gagne...but it did open the door for Chamberlain to be the setup guy, who scares the daylights out of me.

Magic number for the Sox now is 25, I think. Never too early to start thinking about it.

Anything can happen, but I am feeling much better now than I did when this thread was born.

    GO RED SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • papi is on a serious tear.

I think the yank's had their chance, but have squandered their opportunity.

Sox could have TWO 20 game winners, Beckett could win the Cy Young award and Pedroia the ROY award.

Chaz is wrong again! 16-0 Tigers! Sox head in to NY with an 8 game lead - the only thing collapsing will be Georgy Porgy as his team is in shambles!!

i dont know about u guys, but after watching the yankees get kicked around by the tigers these past four days almost as badly as we kicked around the white sox for four games, theyre on the ropes and we need to deliver the knockout punch; i'm looking to have an eleven game lead by thursday at around 4 pm
worst-case scenario: they sweep us and we still leave da bronx with a five game lead (which would still be bigger than the four game lead we had last sunday)
