Scanning foil cards...

Is there a setting on scanners or photo editing software in general to make a foil stand out more on cards, instead of turning black?
This is how foil cards look on my scanner:

but then I see scans like this on Ebay, where the foil background is really alive:

Yeah, I have Photoshop at work and Fireworks at home. Regardless of which one I use, I can get the background to liven up, but then the non-foil image of A-Rod gets rather scarry looking.
