Question about going through my collection from growing up...

Okay, I'm 26. I stopped collecting avidly in 2000. I have bought a few packs here and there since then to keep up with the times a little, but that's it. I'm really into it again, especially wanting to get cards graded. Growing up (early to mid 90's especially) I knew whose cards to store and protect...Griffey, Ripken, Ryan, etc. But my commons are stored away. I know that some good players I didn't really collect then but who are worthwhile now are in there. My questions are these:

If I search through these boxes one card at a time, who should I take out?

Here are some names I have run across so far that I have been pulling out
Biggio, Schilling, Pedro, Randy Johnson, Vizquel, Giambi, Derrek Lee (3 Pristine rookies!!), Trot Nixon (rookies only), Smoltz (I collected him but I guess I missed a few), Maddux (same w/him)...Any other recommendations? How about Jeff Kent for example? Kirk Gibson? Bert Blyleven? Who are let's say future hall of famers that I could pull out? Whose cards sell that you wouldn't normally think of? What about Daryl Kile, Ken Caminiti, and others that have passed away?
What do you guys do and who should I pull out for the future? I just don't know where to begin besides the obvious. Sorry so scattered. I'm just giving lots of examples...any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Hi and welcome!

I'm not a modern card collector, but what I can tell you is that the majority of cards from the early '90s were mass-produced to the point that there is no value in most of these cards. I know there are some specific limited rookies (A-Rod, Jeter, etc.) from that timeframe which can bring big bucks, but the speculating on minor players just never panned out due to the mass quantities of the cards.

If you are thinking of submitting, try posting a scan or two of cards which you think might be worthy, and the folks on here - many of whom have well-trained eagle eyes - can tell you if it would be worth it.

Keep them raw. The cost of grading them will not be worth the investment. With most of those cards, the value is whatever your enjoyment factor is. But for the true superstars, the rest probably have a very limited individual value.

That said -- giving away commons and minor stars to a young kid would be a nice gesture
