OT- Any Kansas City Folks here???

Im about to be relocated by my company to KC. The Chiefs are a step up from the Panthers to me, the Royals a step down from the Charlotte Knights (AAA), ok maybe draw, but no NBA is a stinker.

Just curious what KC has to offer....

Welcome to KC! So far I find it to be a pretty nice town, minus the gang shoot-outs and occasional dead hooker in the river. But other than that it's great! image

Don't live there but I have been to two Chief's games and the tailgating rivals my Packers.

    Hope the move goes well.

And never fear about the lack of an NBA team. With the opening of the Sprint Center downtown it may only be a matter of time before KC gets a team.

  • Only been there once and will not go back. Aside from the smell of coffee roasting in the morning the city did not impress much on me.

Grew up in KC and just moved away about two years ago. Great place for a family. Only average for the single folk though, although that was so long ago for me that the single scene may have changed. Good luck!

Both of my folks are from KC and I grew up nearby - it's a wonderful town with lots to offer. And I second the motion regarding the Chiefs tailgating - it is second to none. Especially if you like BBQ. Good luck with your relocation.

Does Tri-Star (assuming it still exists) still hold card shows in Overland Park at the Merchandise Mart? Great memories and buys from those shows in the early to mid '90s!

I'm from Wichita but I've (of course) been to K.C. a lot over the years. Baseball, blues, BBQ, babes...what else could you possibly want??? (Well, I'd like to see the NHL in the Sprint Center.) I'm going up there this weekend to see the Leafs, er, Jays. (I can wish, can't I?)

    Digdug,

Love the powercat icon! RedHeart, I think I read on this board where just a month ago or so Tri-Star eliminated their KC, Boston, Dallas and every other American League city shows. I went to many of those Merchandise Mart shows, as well as the Glenwood shows when I was a kid (Glenwood Movie Theatre had a convention center).
  • thanks for the feedback guys, specifically its Merriam, KS and its looking like Sept 4th!

I think the one thing you will find about KC is they absolutely love their sports teams. We love the Royals (no matter how hard it is sometimes), Chiefs games are second to none, and you will not be allowed to speak anything positive about the Rams or Cardinals. image Currently plans are under way to do about $300 million in renovations to the sports complex and it should only add to the experience. On top of that there's an arena football team (Brigade), independent baseball (T-Bones), MLS (Wizards) and the speedway.

The Sprint Center may still be a couple years away from having a tenant (aside from the brigade), which I'm sure the people paying taxes are estatic about.

We have the American Royal, which is cool if you like farm animals, and apparently many people do.

The speedway has set off an explosion of local development, there's tons of stuff to do over there. Shopping, food, the T-Bones stadium. You can go there and kill an entire weekend, no problem.

There are some great BBQ joints around. I recommend the Wabash in Excelsior Springs. It's a bit of a drive from Merriam, but if you're looking for a rat hole restaurant, in a rat hole town, with great food, it's the place.

As far as card shows, I don't know that there are any, and I only know of a few shops in the area.

    Welcome to town.

Oh no KCBallboy, don't get the best place to get BBQ in KC argument going! Merriam is right next to Shawnee, where there is a pretty decent card store (75th and Quivira) called simply enough, Baseball Card Store or something like that. The sell on ebay under the name bbcardstor (no "e" at the end).

I didn't say it was the best. I merely recommended it. image

I've been the the BBC Store a few times. Pretty decent stuff with reasonable prices. I didn't know he was on the bay though.
