This is happening too often with this set.

A couple of months ago I started to work on one of my favorite sets of all time the 1969 Topps Football set. I decided I was going to really take my time and only get cards slabbed PSA 8 or above (at least on all the stars) After knocking out a few of what I thought were the big ones, it appears that the SMR is not too up to date with the current eBay market on the set, due to a few of the set builders.

here are a few examples:

Earl Morrall SMR $18.00 for a PSA 8

recent eBay sell:

and there have been a few more that have ended in this range in the last few months

Ray Nitschke SMR $24.00

I thought the set was going to be downhill after I picked up the Piccollo, Sayers, Csonka, and Namath... I think I was quite mistaken...

I was able to get a PSA 8 Nitschke this morning.... but I did not pay anywhere near $24.00 on it though.

That's surprising. SMR is pretty accurate on every other set......

it is accurate on some of the higher priced ones.. Piccollo, Csonka and Sayers... but there are a few that when they pop up if I want to have a legitimate shot at them, I have to open the wallet wide.

usually I am used to the price guide being $100 to high and not $100 to low though image

  • SMR is way off on many sets (in football). Prices are much higher on Ebay. Try to find any of the Packer 1935 Chicles anywhere near SMR - it's not going to happen.
  • Fair enough, the problem is just about all price guides are out dated before they are even completed. The best real world price guide is completed auctions on ebay.

yeah I have used eBay as my price guide for years, but I was hoping the SMR would be a little more accurate in helping me gauge the cost of building this set.

  • I'm building the 69 set too. I've run into similar problems, but this is common with most of the football sets in SMR. I basically put in what I'm willing to pay for a card. If after missing out on a card 2-3 times, I get an idea what the true market is for it and adjust my bid accordingly.

SMR is basically just a really not too instrumental guide.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I pay $25 a month for ebay's marketplace research. It allows me to go back three months to find completed auctions. Since I buy more than just graded cards, this is better for me. Even though $25 seems like a lot, it's defintiely worth it for me when determining how much to bid on an item and how much to list an item for.

Last batch of PSA 7+ '55 TAAs went anywhere from 25% - 100%+ over SMR.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
