Hey you two, have not seen you on here for a while!! Will be going on Saturday, just curious though on how the buying by the dealers is at this type of show??
Bob & Frank -- I'm also on the outside looking in. I chose not to go for a number of reasons, mainly from a buying perspective - it's just not worth the trip anymore, but it is great for the social aspects.
Does anyone know where the National will be in 2008?
The 2008 National wil be in Chicago again, at least that's what I heard.
Dude, I sort of feel the same as you. The last few Nationals I've seen less and less high-grade cards to buy unless you want to pay 150% of smr for 8's. High grade raw is getting tougher and tougher to locate and seems to be drying up. Even high grade commons from certain 1960's Football sets are tough to find. You'll find lot's of NM or lower cards there however. Nothing wrong with NM cards either but if you're trying to fill in or upgrade sets with strict NM-MT cards, the pickings are getting few and far between these days.
Thanks Stingray and Cardbender. I'm not sure if Chicago works for me either.
Yeah, you are right Cardbender, the amount of high grade cards at shows just keeps getting smaller and smaller and that's why I haven't made the trip since Atlantic City in 2003.
My wife did her undergrad and grad work at the University of Chicago and wants to show me more of the city than just O'Hare... This may be my opportunity!!!

I live in a suburb of Chicago so I will definately attend the 2008 National!! Regardless of whether cards are overpriced, I still want to attend. I've only been to 2 Nationals before - 1993 or 1994 in St. Louis (which was amazing) and the late 80's in Chicago.

well the national is just across the street from O'hare. so that would be showing her more of the city!!! I am glad its coming back to town!!!!! i will be able to attend the Set Registry Lucnheon next year. As long as the time doesnt conflict with some work related conference!!

Dan, My reasoning for not going either. AC was a fun one wasnt it. The Italian place we had the dinner at is now closed and bought up by the casinos. You wouldnt recognize the place now. Its had a huge overhaul in the last 4 yrs.

Frank,
I live in mid-michgan area and would rather drive to Chicago anytime than to Detroit, other than seeing a sporting event or maybe one of the casinos. Chicago is great, so much to see and do in downtown. We are going this year to camp to the northeast and drive into Chicago for a visit.
I always try to hit the Nationals in the Midwest unfortunatley this year I can not do Cleveland as I have too tough a job assignmemt this year hopefully next year if it is in Chicago.
Yesterday my son and I went. Here is a shot he took off our cell phone when Greg Oden arrived. Overall the show was not bad, but I have to admit I thought the show in Chicage we went to about 4-5 years ago was better.....and I'm from cleveland!!
Hi Bob: Just got back after 3 days. As always it is hard to find nice quality vintage cards that are not graded but I did get some nice ones. A lot of super nice stuff to look at. And of course, if you wanted to pay the price, just about any graded card you might want was available somewhere. The PSA area was constantly busy, especially compared to other grading companies present. The PSA luncheon was very nice. Anyone who won any kind of best collection award and was present, received it no matter how obscure the team or player set was....so that took quite awhile. Joe once again did a nice job of moderating and answering questions from the floor.
I didn't find the show very busy and really expected friday to pick up in attendance but it didn't. However, just about every dealer I talked to said they were having a good show and were pleased with sales. One dealer I know very well, told me he sold about a fourth of what he brought to other dealers before the Wednesday night opening for the public. I imagine there was a lot of dealer to dealer action which may account for many dealers feeling they did well. I like the Cleveland location because the IX Center seems to have more overall room, plenty of isle space and plenty of parking room.
