Isn't it fun to bust older packs?

I hope this thread stays on topic. Whatever era you collect, isn't it fun to just sit down and bust a box just for the fun of it? I recently opened a OPC 1972 pack and 8 of the cards were in super shape- best card I found was a centered Johnny Bench but it has the usual OPC RUFF CUT. My last box I busted was 1981 Fleer Star Stickers and I really like those/stickers cards. My point is regardless of the era you like/prefer- Have fun it's only cardboard! My next bust is gonna be a 1986 Topps Tattoo box-the ones with Pete Rose on the wrapper. MIKE

    Pretty sick box there, sir.

There really is no substitute for opening packs that have been around for 25+ years. The adrenaline rush is worth way more than packs, more often than not. I can't even imagine what it feels like for the vintage guys who are opening up the fifty year old stuff.

I've been able to hold onto a box without opening it for about 24 hours, forget 24 years. No will power here.

I'd love to crack some old stuff though

Rube - do you know about the blow dryer trick for cards with gum stuck to them? I open lots of early 80's and late 70's stuff and I use a blow dryer on them to soften up the gum so you can peel it off without paper loss. Give it a try next time around.

I would love to crack open a wax box too, but nearly all of them cost way more than the set and I simply feel better getting the sure thing. The last time I bought a wax box was the 1994 Harvest Heritage set (cards with farm tractors and its Ertl toy on the back; don't laugh). I was easily able to get the complete basic set but I'm still one card short of completing the one per pack insert set they did that year. I guess I could buy that 1991 Studio wax box from BBCE once I get around to ordering his 1993-95 Topps Traded sets since it too has way more cards in the wax box than the set (which has quite a few holes in it).

Why do I have to miss out on all the fun? image

yeah bigs, but the moisture from the gum turned the gum black and it sunk into the card and puffed the cardboard all up ,otherwise i would have lol,it was ruined asap as soon as it was opened, looked like somebody spit tobacco juice on the front of it lol on the bottom corner!
believe me-i cant last a day either lol- i found it in the closet of it woulda been ripped years ago lol-i just forgot about it!or my son might have hid em years ago lol

opening old wax is extremely fun , not rewarding all the time but it is exciting for sure

most recently i opened 2 1966 philly football packs , the results are currently on ebay which you can see through my signature link.

    in the past year I have opened 2 68 topps baseball wax , 70 baseball, 71 opc's . 72 wax , 72 opc's , 75 cellos , 68 football wax , 5 boxes of 84 opc and a box of 84 cellos.

a friend of mine (former board member) and I opened a 75,76,80 and 82 opc baseball wax boxes in the last year while drinking a few beers.

    oh what fun ....................

I still have a dream of pulling a couple of cards out of wax packs (as opposed to buying them as a single) - '75 George Brett mini, any Mickey Mantle regular issue & any Hank Aaron regular issue. The only problem is the packs with the awesome Mantle or Aaron's are all pretty pricey. I'm working on it, though!

  • I've got a box of 1982 Donruss that I plan to crack as soon as it arrives. If I ever hit the lottery, I plan on putting an older set (pre-1970) together from unopened boxes. :-)
