That centering sure does not seem psa 10 worthy....

    That's certainly not a 10 I'd ever consider buying.

Dang, the registry is a powerful thing, no? image

It's a tough card due to centering, but I don't see how they ever decided that it was worthy of a 10!! I'd expect an 8 with an outside shot at a 9.

Actually, the centering is 41/59 l/r (bottom, at it's worse point), and about 50/50 t/b with a very slight tilt.

What tool do you use to be that precise on centering? Just curious.

buy the card, not the holder
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

JRuler plus the basic Windows calculator.

Get the image, blow it up some, then use your curser and JRuler to figure out the measurements for the edge borders.

Left Centering = (Left Edge) / (Right Edge + Left Edge)
Right Centering = (Right Edge) / (Right Edge + Left Edge)

Why bother with the holder, then?
  • If one doesn't like the grade, simply pass it by. Why do we continue to talk about the supposed preferred grading that 4SC or random_high_volume dealer gets?

I'n thinking for every one of these, they get 100 cards that are graded lower than they think they get.
  • Not that the card is a high end 10, but the l - r centering is better than 40/60.

    GEM-MT 10: Gem Mint.

A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card. Attributes include four perfectly sharp corners, sharp focus and full original gloss. A PSA Gem Mint 10 card must be free of staining of any kind, but an allowance may be made for a slight printing imperfection, if it doesn't impair the overall appeal of the card. The image must be centered on the card within a tolerance not to exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front, and 75/25 percent on the reverse.

Is that card within this range??

I don't know....but, no matter how many cards you grade a day, I cannot justify grading this one as a 10 based on just eye appeal alone.

I'd send that thing in for hopes of a 9 and with realistically a chance at a solid 8. It's sad the treatment that 4SC gets as opposed to our small subs that we submit.

  • It does appear to be in the centering range though, just barely. Its worse problem is the slight tilt to the right. I don't believe the preferential treatment as I doubt the graders know who the cards they are grading belong to. I do believe though as a grader the human factor eventually comes in. If you have a stack of 100 cards in front of you and the first 75 are 10s, a person will just natuarally start assuming the others are graded just the same and not look as hard at the rest.. Just human nature.
