Another 4sc gem?

So Im looking for a nicely centered 1989 Score psa 10 Michael Irvin rc and I come across this one.

I know we always say they get "preferred" treatment and I hate to be a cry baby but this card really sucks! Check the centering.

Eye appeal went bye bye on this one.

i would say its 60/40 at worse but then again I could be wrong. IMO it looks really nice! Shouldn't you be more worried about diapers?

Matt, the first 3 #'s on the cert # are 818. I suspect that this was or is a former employee of the GEM grading Co. Maybe it was the last card graded that day. Maybe it was a PSA worker gone postal. Maybe the white lines at the bottom of the card are just a reflection of the silver and gold teeth of the super rich 4sc overlords. Maybe you just are not getting any sleep lately. Maybe they have a quota of 10's they have to hit on any given day. We may never know.

An ugly 10, that's for sure. A PSA 10 shouldn't have a tilt, either, IMO.

Great, he gained 7 oz in a week at home. I guess its a good amount for a preemy. The kid eats very well which is good. Sleep

That's what I was thinking. I would never send anything close to that for grading.

I have a stack of 8's on my desk that look better. I'm w/ Arny - I wouldn't have submitted that card for fear of getting an 8. Ugly, Ugly 10.

Looks like they submit them with a minimum grade- the 10s first, then the 9s. Only a couple cards didn't meet the minimum grade (that's what M/G means).

Yep. And then those M/G end up for sale via NESC. Enjoy.

Let the conspiracy theorists chime in. I'm still trying to figure out the 2 day turnaround the cards getting from Newport Beach, CA to Massachusettes. Sure, the 3 day turnaround is great but they've got quite the well oiled machine going getting the cards back in one day, scanned and posted on ebay. Now that's impressive.

Let the conspiracy theorists chime in. I'm still trying to figure out the 2 day turnaround the cards getting from Newport Beach, CA to Massachusettes. Sure, the 3 day turnaround is great but they've got quite the well oiled machine going getting the cards back in one day, scanned and posted on ebay. Now that's impressive. >>

Yeah, this kind of turnaround doesn't bode well for the rest of us schmucks.

Irvin looks like a 9 but barely even makes that grade for the centering.

Grading = dart throwing.

Yes they have a good eye but seriously as shown by the Irvin their "eye" isn't that good. I guarantee if I had submitted that card it would not come back a 10.

The best thing 4sc has done is to make the price of 9s and 10s for late 70s & 80s cards come down by flooding the market with them. I remember paying $200 for an 81 Kevin Mchale PSA 9 three or four years ago and you can get them for under $20 now. That is good for psa 9 collectors like myself especially if you wait for the better looking 9s of a card, there is a mild premium but since there are so many more of them available they aren't that expensive. They also seem to have almost an unlimited supply of most star cards from the 80s in mint or better condition.

Of course for folks that collect psa 10s and spent a bunch of money when they were "rarer" seeing this sort of business model and the treatment they receive for being a large submitter can be a little discouraging.

It also means it is almost pointless trying to submit non stars from these years yourself unless you spend the time and effort with a loope to get pretty much only 10s (and have the discipline to not talk yourself into subbing borderline cards). Personally I still submit a bunch of 86 fleer basketball because I am trying to build as much of that set in personally subbed PSA 9 cards (from packs) as I can. It is an expensive way of building the set but more rewarding for me personally.

I will also add that I've won plenty of 4sc auctions for psa 9 cards and have been happy with the majority of them. They definitely have some nice cards but I think they get the benefit of the doubt with a lot of their cards.

I'm not trying to be dramatic here, but these threads always make me very nervous. It's true that the card has the value and not the holder, but the holder is supposed to be the proof of condition. What would the PSA card be worth if everyone suddenly believes that PSA is a joke?

As for the insanely quick turn around time, I don't really mind it. That's an acceptable perk for such a huge customer, changing the grading scale is not.

The card Matt posted is definately garbage. However, I don't think 4sc's percentage of 10's is as high as you might think. I don't know how it all works, but I know that the results from bulk 81X orders are always arranged by grade and larger orders are usually broken down into smaller ones. When I punched in order numbers around the one Josh posted, I saw results with a low number of 10's and I also saw orders like the one below with 9's and 8's. My point is I think you have to look up multiple orders to see the percentage of 10's they actually received from one submission. I also wonder if the dates were seeing below really reflect when the cards arrived or if the received date is just when PSA created that order by breaking up a larger one, if that makes any sense.
