Incredible Auction of 1986 Topps Football Cards...

Being a 49ers fan, I follow the 1986 Topps Football set fairly religiously. I came across this action for the following cards from the 1986 Topps Set:

1. Walter Payton BGS 9.5
2. Dan Marino BGS 9.5
3. John Elway BGS 9.5
4. Joe Montana BGS 9.5
5. Jerry Rice BGS 9.5
6. Montana/Obrein BGS 9.5
7. Reggie White BGS 9.5
8. Steve Young BGS 9.5
9. Andre Reed BGS 9.5
10. Bruce Smith BGS 9.5

Here's the link:

Auction for 1986 Topps Football Cards @ BGS 9.5

Now, if you know anything about the 1986 Topps Football Set (and I know you do), you know this set is PLAGUED with problems, e.g. centering, chipping, corners, sharpness, you name it.

My question. How likely do you think these cards were pulled from a pack and submitted to BGS and came back a BGS 9.5? I recall reading somewhere that BGS grades sheet cut cards. I wonder if this is where these cards came from. In any case, I can see this auction easily going over $10,000.00, maybe even topping $20,000.00. Obviously, that's a lot of coin.

I remember for the longest, longest, longest time, there were NO BGS 9.5 Jerry Rice rookie cards. I think there might be one, maybe two with the old label with the subgrades on the back.

As for the Steve Young BGS 9.5, you got to be kidding me. What's the POP report on this card for a PSA 10? I can't imagine there are too many. Of course, your thoughts are appreciated.

BGS grades trimmed cards I will never bid on a single BGS graded card. In my opinion they could be trimmed cards, but I only think that bc BGS has graded trimmed card.. But who knows its just my opinion. I mean they grade sheet cut. Same thing right?

Oh, also, it seems quite odd that the seller would sell the cards as a lot. He/she would probably make off better, if not much better, selling the cards individually.

Nice that BGS has only graded 2% 9.5s but how man sheets are there compaired to raw cards? About 2% would be my guess. Sheet cut sucks and I wont bid on anything that has a chance of being so . Not that yours is but I just dont like BGS when it comes to grading. Beckett is the web site you want to be on.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

<< <i>when i go to the link, auction has been pulled.... >>

here's why (taken form the buy, sell trade forum)

<< <i>Ebay was nice enough to cancel my auction early Saturday morning because they stated I broke Ebay listing rules buy having the word psa in the title. So I relisted the auction and the new auction number is # 180141640814. I added a 1986 Roger Craig PSA 9 to the auction so I would comply with Ebay listing rules. As of this evening the high bid is 10 bids @ $4,999.oo with 14 watchers. Thanks everyone for all of the nice Email about this auction.

I sure don't understand people bidding $3999.99 and then $4999.99.

It's almost like they're trying not to win? image

That's like bidding $1 under the highest bid on the Price is Right.
