Any more group rips in our future?

I know this whole subject seems to be taboo on here now, but is it possible with direct shipping and all that someone might arrange another group rip of some vintage wax boxes? I first became a member of this board back in January specifically to join the group rip on the 1977 - 1984? baseball and then subsequently the infamous 1976 - 1989 football rip. I was slightly disappointed with not getting any of the big rookies in either rip, but it was still a lot of fun to open up several packs of mint cards from 30 years ago. I know I probably would have lost a little money on the investment if I didn't get refunds, but it was still worth the excitement and anticipation. Aren't there any others who have a rapport with Steve Hart who could get a deal for us. I can't be the only one who would like to open a few old packs but can't really afford to spend the $400 on their own box. THIS IS A CRY FOR HELP.

I'm in, and I nominate Lee (CDsNuts) to handle everything.

Yeah, good idea nam. That's all I need. Do I seem like the kind of person that wants to or is capable of being responsible for thousands of dollars of other people's money?

Sure- everybody send your hard-earned money to an alcoholic poker player. How could that backfire?

Ah the good old days opening 78s by the case with softparade. That stuff Steve had was unbelievably clean and the cards were coming out razor sharp. That was when you could get $80-$150 for just about any PSA 10 from the set.

nam, just send me the $16.52 and I'll send you something from my personal collection. You will not be disappointed....... unless you don't like 1992 Leaf baseball. Then you'll be disappointed.

I saw those on BBCE. They seem very reasonably priced compared to the 58s.

Do you think Steve's prices at the National will be comparable, higher, or lower than his current website prices?

  • Okay, so where are we? Is someone seriously going to start a poll to determine interest/cost? I don't really know anyone on here, plus I am very naive to boot, so I'll trust anyone that is viewed as solid by this board.

Obviously making an effort to answer someones question is not good enough again.......... or was this another pessimistic, bummer, "didn't read the thread" response by me?

If you know Steve so well, why don't you call him up and ask him about his pricing at the National.

I tried this last month with a 1980 Hockey Case rip but got no interest. I loved watching the rips but I think it'll take longer for the bitterness to wear off. I had organized a discount with Steve, had an arrangement where Steve would collect all the money and send out cards directly from him to the purchasers, so basically all I was doing was providing him a list (never having any contact with the money or the cards) and people were still pessimistic and mistrusting. Granted ripping Hockey is a bit of a niche item but I was still disappointed to have zero interest from the group. It's a shame as I'd love to see another group rip as long as it's done safely. I wish you good luck and I'll be looking for the sign-up post depending on the product you go for.

  • I'm sure that Steve Hart would help organize this. It would be a good sale for him.

I or we can contact him if you guys want to decide on what to rip. I'm sure he'd collect money, package and send out to us from his shop.

We don't need a middle man, that's were the problems can occur.

Let's ask, I'm sure it'd be good for business.

Would Steve be agreeable to a group rip? I think that would be a good idea since the money would be going to him anyway. P.S. I don't play poker LOL

I bought a few packs from Steve at last year's national. He priced the stuff right around his website prices if I remember correctly. I bought a 1969 and 1968 baseball wax pack and he discounted them both slightly. As was stated earlier, write down his website prices for the packs you're interested in. When you get to the show, compare. If the prices are higher, negotiate down. Even if you match the web price, you'll save the cost of shipping and worries of the item getting lost/damaged in transit.
  • nam812nam812 Posts: 10,601 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks Gemint, that's the kind of helpful "comparison" info I was looking for.
  • I know that it is probably a lot of work to come up with different packages/costs and coordinate payments, but is someone up to doing this and starting a poll? It seems like baseball and to a slightly lesser degree football would be the most popular packages. Maybe we could combine both sports (mid 70's to mid 80's) and keep the cost around $150 or so?
