Nice job on the Dawson! Are you keeping it or selling it?

I'll be keeping it. I've cursed the names of more than one bidder for PSA 7's over the last 6 months. So to land an 8 is terrific. More than I was looking for, but it will look just fine amongst the other HOF'ers in my collection. image

Nice to have a nice raw find come back a little better than you expected. I was worried it might have been trimmed or something, I couldn't believe it was that sharp, but this dealer always has some nice raw stuff and he holds it for me. Problem is the only local show he does is 45 minutes away and he's only there on Saturdays and it's once a month. This was the first time I had seen him in a few months and he pulled the Dawson out. He had it marked $175, I asked what his best price was, he goes "ah...how about $100?" SOLD!

Wow, I can't believe a dealer dropped his price from $175 to $100 just like that. Heck, even if you paid the full asking price for the card that would still only be half the value of an 8. I love hearing raw to slabbed success stories like this. I guess I have to get out to more shows! I haven't been to one in years. I've just assumed that all of the good stuff has been gone for a long time now in the times of PSA and eBay. I guess not.

There are plenty of dealers and buyers that have cleaned up on raw stuff. Feels good to get a win. My last "big" win was a raw Bart Starr I paid $200-$225 for. (It was a part cash/trade deal) but the total value was in that range. Anyway, I figured the Starr for a lock 6, with a modest shot at a 7 and it came back a 7. Which at the time were selling for $350. now I think they're up over $500.

This dealer, Steve is his name, is fantastic. He buys up raw sets from people and breaks them up. He knows SMR, he's pretty good about judging what a card would grade and will come down to, or below SMR on most everything. He knows you have to pay the grading fees and he accounts for that. I send him lists, he brings the stuff the next time around and we negotiate. I left out that I did give him a small stack of NM fleer commons for $1/card. About 25 of them. So I guess technically, I paid $125 for the Dawson. I was so mad I lost out on that PSA 7 that closed at $280 a couple weeks back...and then I was the underbidder to the PSA 7 Dave ended up winning...I would have eventually chased an 8, but now I can cross that one off my list and focus on something else.
  • Envoy...you must be talking about Steve Forsberg! Awesome vintage dealer. I've bought from him many times and I have to drive 2hrs to that show...one way. Last year I bought a raw '69 Mike Shannon from him for $3 and it came back a 9! I sold it to Dave Cryer for over $300. High end raw is few and far between, but it's out there. Good to hear someone else likes Steve stuff........

Yes, it is Steve Forsberg. He's great. I love dealing with him, he's always got nice raw, his buy prices are strong and his sell prices are usually even better.
