Question about BVG and other grading services

How do the other grading services like BVG and SGC compare to PSA for vintage card grading? I like the idea of the half grade system, so you have an 8.5 instead of a "high end 8" or something like that, but I'm wondering how the standards and prices realized for vintage cards compare with PSA. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their views!

    Mike,

I would send a private message to board member "lawnmowerman". He is very, how shall we say, "intimate" with the Beckett company.

P.S. As usual, I'm just being a smart aleck. Welcome to the boards Mike, if you search for BVG and/or SGC, there are some other threads on this board from the past that can answer your questions.
  • The one thing i like about beckett is that you pay for service and not the price of the card. I wish PSA would do this. If you want 10 day service with beckett it doesn't matter if the card is worth 1.00 or 100,000 dollars. Same fee unlike PSA. I've always said why should it matter what the card is worth? Should get the same grade if it's the 5.00 dollar special or the 1 day service. This i find is one of the cons with PSA.
But if you are looking for resale value then PSA is the way to go. SGC i will never do again. I sent cards on 2 subs. 5 day and 10 day service.
Well 22 days later not including weekends and/or holidays. No free vouchers there !! I complained about the service and they didn't offer me anything back. No vouchers or partial refund. I could have went with a longer service level like 20 days and paid less.
I also like the half grades and wish PSA would do this but there others who disagree. Might be best to leave it alone because of the amount of cards already graded. People would be breaking them out and the pop report would never be accurate.
If you want a fast turnaround then don't go thith SGC.

I will tell you something about my last experience with BVG: I purchase at Tony Perez rookie BVG 8.5 that was stunning. I purchased it to crack it out to be submitted to for a hopeful PSA 9. Three months later, it has come back trimmed three times. My $175 purchase isn't worth the stamp it came with. So now I ONLY buy PSA or SGC, no prospecting with BVG. image
  • BGS/BVG doesn't have even a fraction of the experience with vintage cards and the nuances of altering as compared to PSA and SGC.

I recall the punk graders that BGS/BVG advertised several months ago -- they looked like the young adults you'd see in a comic book store (i.e., 'Comic Book Guy' on The Simpsons); in short, they have not been in the business long enough to be reliable.

Many, many, many people will share similar experiences as colebear.

In short, I do not like BGS or BVG. I do not like them Sam-I-Am.

Its really personal preference, however, PSA's will garner a little better price on vintage for the same grade card. Some like the holders better for SGC, some like the BVG slab. Also depends on what type vintage t206, or cards from the 50's, 60's.......a lot of older vintage collectors prefer the SGC look. I have all three types in my collection.......i buy the card not the holder. (not your issue, i know).

    Good Luck!

SGS is the best; I'd go with them image I said SGS, not SGC.
