Card shop find.....

For my birthday in May, my girlfriend gave me $100 gift card from my local card shop, which isn't bad as far as card shops go. It's still hard to find anything I'd willingly spend money on there as the prices are typical card shop prices. Nothing wrong with that, but I'd rather get stuff on ebay for 50% less. I had been there twice since my birthday and the only thing I ever left with was supplies. Anyway, it looks like they just got a shipment back from PSA and I saw this in the case:

I just love when someone gets a deal like that from a card shop. Half those guys are crooked.
Congrats!
PS I'll give you $40 ($15 dollar profit) (:
It books for about $240
It's nice to see the buyer get a break.
Do you think they meant to price it at $250?

No, it was Lee.
My response was, “If you have the time, (that being the key phrase) you would come out much better breaking up the sets and selling the individual cards. However, it takes a long time to scan those cards and create the individual listings. As pointed out, your listing and final value fees would be higher, but at the same time your profits would be larger. You could aslo make more money off the shipping - say like $3.00 for the first card and $.50 for each additional card. Those additional cards add up!” I was criticized for that response telling me that it was “gouging” “knowingly overcharging” and “excessive.” I am not here to keep arguing that point but it leads up to what I have to say.
When Lee finds a card priced at almost 10% of book in his local baseball card shop, he buys it and posts his finding on this thread. Wouldn’t it have been the right thing to do to tell the card shop owner that he has it under priced so that he doesn’t loose money? Then “stown” states “Way to stick it to the man”. I guess this is the part that I just don’t get. When I suggested to someone thinking about selling their collection that they could “also make more money off the shipping” I get slammed. I didn’t say, they should “stick it to the buyers” on shipping. I merely suggested that he could make some extra money off the shipping to pay himself for his time. But what if I would have said that??? I’m sure a lot more people would have had an opinion and I’m sure it wouldn’t have been favorable. I would have been crucified! So what’s the difference? It’s okay to say, “stick it to the seller”, but not “stick it to the buyer”. Why does anybody have to stick it to anybody? Had Lee bought that card from another board member, this thread would have never been posted! Am I right? Because he wouldn’t want to look like he was bragging about getting over on another board member. What’s the difference? It seems to be the opinion of a lot of people of these boards that it’s a good thing when they buyer gets over on the seller, but when a seller does it to a buyer they are dishonest and everybody should know about it. How do you differentiate the two?
Please don’t think I am criticizing Lee or that I’m better than anyone else, because I am not. If I were in Lee’s place, I would have done the SAME THING! I’m just simply asking what’s the difference between sticking it to the seller and sticking it to the buyer?
Go ahead “stown” and put your spin on this one. I’m sure you will. You don’t have to, I’ll do it for you. You could say something like, “Well, Lee paid the price that was marked on the card” Then I could say something like, “Yeah, well the buyer clearly knew the shipping costs, before they bid” We could keep going back and forth but I’m done arguing about it – I don’t want to beat a dead horse. I just simply want to know “WHY IS IT OKAY TO SAY, “STICK IT TO THE SELLER", BUT NOT "STICK IT TO THE BUYER?” Then again, why stick it to anyone???

I will say that I walked into the shop and agreed to purchase the card on their terms. As for making money on shipping, overhcarging for shipping is akin to the shop trying to charge me 10% sales tax (it's 5% in MD) and pocketing the additional 5%. They can say it's sales tax, but that's not where the money's going. But hey, if they post a sign that they charge 10% sales tax, then it's ok right?
Move along people, nothing to see here.
I'm not going to a store and say, "Hey, your prices are too low, let me give you more money."
Preowned auto?? I'm sure there never has been any consumer taken advantage of buying a preowned auto. They are slimier than card shop owners.
Whether buying a house, land, a car or cards, if you can find any kind of great deal go for it...
Preowned auto at a garage sale???
"Hey, that rake your selling for $2.00 is way undervalued. I'll give you $20.00."
Not trying to insult POA, but...

But... It's the seller's responsibility to sell an item, once marked, for the price they listed it for. If you pull into a gas station and the price is .75 cheaper than everyone else, are you filling your tank or getting out of the car to discuss the price w/ the manager.
Let the buyer beware.... the professional seller should know better.
Lee, sweet find!
(2) Things you can take to the bank:
1. The blatant hypocrisy you will see from some of self labeled elites on this board will leave you scratching your head.
2. You will never be able to establish an understanding of just what will make these guys yell "Citizens Arrest!, Citizens Arrest!".
My advice would be to suck up to a few of these clowns and you will be able to do as you please with back slaps to spare.
Loves me some shiny!
<< <i>Seeing that card reminds me, did anyone see McCovey at the Home Run Derby?? Does he have MS or something of the kind, was sad seeing him trying to walk with those things. >>
I think Willie's knees are really bad. Not sure how many surgeries he has had on his knees. I think Earl Campbell is also broken down. I seen him regarding the NFL Pension squabble of Upshaw versus some of the retired players.
As for Lee getting a great deal, being that he bought it from a card shop should have some bearing in this discussion. They are in the business of selling cards and should know better. I would have done the same thing. I think there would be a difference if he bought it off some old lady widow selling off her late husband's (or is mad at her ex husband/boyfriend and selling off his collection to get back at him
But isn't part of the fun of collecting rummaging through card shop boxes and going to garage and estate sales looking for the big find? And come up empty 99.99% of the time.
the guys sell cards for a living they mark the price they are asking, if they marked it $2500 would it have sold? if they meant $25 or $250 they would have wondered why the card wasn't selling.
i sell at flea markets from time to time and the price i have on a card is the price i'm asking (high end they usually come down from there). i once had a .10 box and mistakenly put a pujols in there, what was i going to do tell the kid it's now several dollars cause it pujols? i gave it to him for a dime, it was my mistake and my responsibility to price the card for what i want to sell it for. the ironic part of that was that the kid asked me if i had any pujols and i said i didn't and he found one in my dime box, oh well!!!
what i'm trying to say is it's there inventory and their cards price them accordingly, it their business!!!
