Cooperstown

Last week me my dad and little brother went on a pilgrimage to baseball heaven. I think I could have spent the rest of my life there. We stopped in PA near philly to see family for a few days and then went up to Cooperstown. On the way back we stopped in DC to watch the Nationals play the Brewers at RFK and then again in Richmond to see the Braves AAA facilities even though they did not have a game. We even got a private tour of the Braves stadium, The Diamond. We had a blast and here are pictures. Sorry for the size but I figured you guys would want to see the detail on these treasures, however if I need to resize them I will. Also, these aren't all of the pictures I took, probably half.

Sorry for the Blur on the Wagner, but it's in a dim room and the flash did nothing but make it too bright.

that sounds like a real cool trip.

    Very nice pictures.
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

Dont you just love that Museum! I go there 2-3 times a year. I am less than 2 hours from Cooperstown. What a great place to stay for relaxation. A great golf course too if you are in to that sort of thing.

It's truly amazing. After we spent about 4-5 hours in the museum, we spent another 3-4 walking through all of the shops on main St. I wish I lived closer than a 20+ hour drive haha.

I am actually going camping near there in two weeks. Im sure I'll go and check out the shops one day. I just hope it doesnt rain! Did you look at vinage, modern, or a mix? The BEST store to just go in and wow yourself ...I think it's called "National Pastime"??? But has some great stuff and so much that you have to really look closely. Last time I went in I saw an early 1900s Ty Cobb Silk. Incredible!

Yeah the stuff is great. I think we went into just about every store on the street. I know it's the baseball hall of fame and stuff but I also didn't expect that many card shops. The one thing that I thought was weird was that not a single store carried a hank aaron t-shirt which I was hoping to find. The lake that the town is on is beautiful too.

  • But watch the speed limit around that lake!!!!!!!! It is only 35 mph. I learned that the hard way on my last visit! I am about 3.5 hours and make the trip about every other year.

thanks for sharing...I have to make the trip out to Cooperstown. I live about a half hour to 45 mins from Canton, so I go to the Football HOF yearly...but never have to Baseball Hall...I will put on my TO DO list!

Went there last year for my first time. So much to see there. Thought to myself, is this heaven, nope this is Cooperstown. Close enough for me!!

Everything about the Baseball HOF is great. Great countryside scenery on the way into town, the small town feel, all the little shops on Main St., and of course, the Hall of Fame. I've been there 3 times. Can't wait to go back!

Thank you for posting the pictures Goot!

You've really given me the bug to go there this year. I've never been and it's always been one of my dreams. I'll be staying with a friend in August to see a Red Sox game, maybe he will let me crash an extra night or two so I can make the 3.5 hour drive out there.

You said you were looking for an Aaron shirt, are you a Braves fan or just an Aaron fan?
    Looking for Carl Willey items.
  • That is by far the best museum in America.

I will note that I have not been to the Music Hall of Fame in Ohio, but I doubt it comes close.

  • I tried my best to talk my wife into going to Cooperstown during my 4th of July week off. I thought "Independance Day, Baseball, and the Hall of Fame, how could she say no?"

Turns out that a 14 hour drive from Tennessee to NY wasn't what she had in mind...

nice pics - thanks for sharing them.

Haven't been there since I was a kid in about 1980

  • Cool pics! Does anybody know when they added the baseball cards? I was there in 2000 and either they weren't there or I totally missed them?

My dad and I did that years ago. It's a great bonding experience...

    Good times.

    Thanks for sharing image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

They've been there every time I've visited (about 7 or so). I remember seeing them way back in the early 80's.

If anyone has any interest in the game, the HOF is a must see!! There is so much and they have a warehouse that they rotate memorabilia from. I think it would be the coolest job someone could have.

  • My trip is at the end of August.

I've never been. My dad and I (and family) are headed up that way to go camping the last week of July. Oh, and there's the minor detail about seeing Cal and Tony get inducted. Those pictures are awesome. I can't wait to get there.

Nice pics, I went there when I was about 15 with my dad and mom. I am 28 now and would really like to go back!!
  • Took my son there last year (or maybe 2 years ago?). What a great time and a great town. Unfortunately we had a 22 hours drive ahead of us and only spent 5 hours at the Hall. Nothing around town. Next time we will spend the weekend.

When entering the actual HALL, it is like entering a church. Everyone whispers and all are respectful...awesome!

Awesome pictures. I have been there 3 times and was at the 1984 Inductions of Drysdale,Aparicio,Farrell,Reese and Killebrew it was nothing but awesome even considering there was a rain downfall just prior to the ceremony. The next day we went to the HOF game between my Home Town Tigers and Atlanta Braves and it must have been 100 degrees that day.
Went back in 2003 just to visit the HOF again and found several new shops with memorabilia that were not there in 84.
There was once a card show there during induction weekend ran by a fellow named Fellowell I believe that attracted some great dealers back in 84 remember paying $110 for a 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set with Card #68.
Cooperstown is definetly a must see for any real baseball fan and family.

Thank you for posting the pictures of their card collection. I've always been curious what condition they were. What grade do you think their Wagner would bring??

Are the Cooperstown card shops generally for tourists (i.e. inexperienced in the world of cards) and thus, really overpriced? If so I'm glad I've been collecting for a while because a trip to the museaum would make me want to go on a card buying binge!
