If you are going to have fun busting them, then you did OK regardless of price.

If your wanting to sell them , I'd hope you got them under $40 or $50.

I dunno about you guys, but I'd enjoy a rip like this. Great trip down memory lane.

Looks like someone already ripped the 90 Topps though.

The going rate for many of those is $1 each, maybe $2 for some (considering past sales, including mine). At that price, it's an inexpensive quantity rip but I sure hope the buyer didn't pay any more for those.

There are player collectors who pay a premium for specific PSA 10s from those sets.

A 1991 Fleer George Brett PSA 10 just sold for $50.

Unless you're one of those guys who uses $20 bills for toilet paper, this isn't ALL firewood.

Could you be more specific as to how much you paid? I know most of this stuff is indeed quite cheap but folks, it does add up.

BTW, I personally wouldn't mind those Best of AL/NL sets (I have been thinking of doing a 1987 Opening Day, 1988-89 Baseball's Best set run) and one each of those three Collect-A-Books series. The other stuff I already have.

Look, I know you (and probably some others) probably think what I collect is a joke. But I collect what I collect because one, I grew up in the 80s-mid 90s (so I have memories of buying those packs and such) and I'm also working on my 70s Topps set run as well (it only goes back to 1976 so far). And frankly, I'm thrilled to be able to afford to get runs of complete sets at all (remember, I didn't start collecting sets until I was in college; before the best I could afford was a few packs or grab bags here and there). But I don't yet have the luxury of spending thousands (or even a few hundred) of dollars on cards at-will like "everyone else in the hobby". image I mean, I would absoultely LOVE to be able to get the early 70s and 1960s Topps sets someday (even in mid-grade), but until my pocketbook is a LOT bigger, what I'm working on right now (like my Fleer/Ultra/Flair insert run and possible future Topps football set run) is the best I can do.

Thanks so much. It's not easy having to collect on a quite limited budget (I only get $100/month for cards if you can believe that), but I make it work and take it one step at a time. Rome wasn't built in a day you know. And who knows? Maybe this Christmas I'll be able to get something very special, like 1974 and/or 1975 Topps sets (the 1975 set is my "1952 Topps" in terms of ultimate dream set if you will) OR start a big Topps football set run if BBCE still has them all by the time Christmas comes! image

Estil, I respect you for collecting those sets, and your collection is no joke to me. I grew up with the same cards as you and every time you talk about your collection it brings back very fond memories for me!! Every set needs a collector, hey I just started putting together a PSA graded 1987 topps set. So you are not the only one that is collecting "worthless" cards. image

Keep on keeping this a hobby!!
  • I also enjoy opening cheap stuff like this there are a few hidden gems in these cards as well somoene mentioned the Brett, many of those Fleer and Donruss sets are very hard to get in high grades due to lack of quality control.
  • BuccaneerBuccaneer Posts: 1,794 ✭✭
I think I figured it out. $100/month (which is not too far off from what I have averaged, buy minus sell) can go a long ways to building a mid-grade 60s or early 70s set. But you have to be patient and not expect to buy a whole set or even a whole series at a time. Take the 1975 set, in three months, you can build one at the budget instead of waiting to get it all at once. Buying whole sets at once might be kewl but if getting semi-vintage sets is your goal, you can start doing it now instead of spending it on other stuff. For example, I sold a complete raw 1974 set (average mid-grade with some nice cards) for $140 last year.

Estil - I would liket to apologize for any comments I've made in this thread and past threads about what you collect. They were said looking for a laugh, and in retrospect they were insensitive, and that really is not who I am. I'm glad to see that you are doing the most with the budget you allow yourself, and that alone tells me that your priorities are in order. It's nice to see the genuine excitement that you have about yours cards. You won't hear me say anything bad about the types of cards you collect again.
  • EstilEstil Posts: 7,232 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hey, it's no problem; as long as you didn't really mean anything bad about it, it's all good. And frankly, I'm very grateful to be in this congregation of people who love collecting trading cards as much as I do. I'm also grateful that cards/sets from the 70s/80s/90s (especially most insert sets) are much more affordable now and makes 1974-75 Topps sets within reach. Look through your Becketts from the early 90s versus the Becketts now and Ebay and you'll see what I mean.

Buccaneer, I too hope someday to go as far back at least 1970. I still want to get NRMT/MT sets of 1974 and 1975 as they are more more affordable/available than earlier sets, and I'll probably also get 1973 in NRMT/MT grade, as it too is affordable (about the cost of 1974-75 together). As for 1972 or earlier, even EX-EXMT sets are easily several hundred (or even over a thousand or two depending on year) dollars a year, so I'd better stick with EX-EXMTish or so for those years once I'm ready and can make that journey.

But I guess I figure, why stop at just a Topps run? Why not Donruss/Fleer too (as they go back to 1981)? And Score/Upper Deck are nice too, and why not give it a sense of completion with all the Traded/Update sets to go with them? And of course, I have fond memories of collecting Fleer/Ultra inserts out of packs so I try to go for complete runs of those up to 1995 (remember how happy I was for example when i got all the 1994s? image ). And with the help of digicat here, I'm only a few send-in sets away from getting all the Topps send-in/all-star/rookie sets too! Wow, this hobby sure can get addictive, even if you're not going for a vintage set or PSA 10s, eh?

I guess one way of looking at it, is this. Think of one of those cheap sets (like 1988 anything, or 1991 Fleer or something) as like a single brick. By itself, you're right, it's not worth much at all. But what if you're able to take several bricks, and build something great? After all, having say, a Donruss run without the 1988 or a Fleer run without the 1991 is like seeing a house with a shingle missing from the roof; it looks silly!

Estil, no shame in your game at all.

I'm 27, and I grew up during the "worthless era" of card production. 1987 Topps, 1988 Donruss, 1988 Score, etc mean THE WORLD to me because it meant the world to me as a kid, before I ever bought a price guide. And since these sets were so over-produced and there is a lack of HOF rookies, the boxes and sets and singles are SUPER inexpensive. Most dealers just see them as a joke. FINE!!! GREAT!!! These years being largely worthless is the best possible scenario for collectors like you and I, as long as we stay true to our inner child. I LOVE that I can go buy boxes of 87 Topps for the cost of a big sandwich and recreate my youth. I wouldn't want it any other way.

And don't believe for one moment that these guys putting together sets from fifty years ago don't wish their cherished cards were "worthless" as well.

There's room in this hobby for everybody.

Indeed, why do you think it's now realisticly possible in terms of affordablity to collect all those early-to-mid 1990s Fleer/Ultra/Flair inserts as well? I remember buying those Fleer/Ultra packs in the mid-90s and being thrilled that every pack had an insert (1994 onward) and I thought that year's inserts especially were the best! And today I can readilty afford to try to collect 'em all (my goal there is to get all Fleer/Ultra/Flair insert sets from 1986-95)! image I can even possibly do a run of Ultra Gold Medallion sets for $50-$75 each at some point too! You sure couldn't do that the year they came out!
