Does anyone here collect whole wax/rack/cello/vending cases of cards?

Okay, lots of people love to collect unopened material (such as myself). But most people can only collect single packs or if they're really financially sound, whole wax boxes or whatnot. But does anyone here collect whole wax (or cello, or rack, or vending, or whatever) CASES? The reason I'm curious is all the ones I see on Ebay and at BBCE and I'm quite surprised how affordable some of them are. Of course, there's that $25K case of 1975 Topps minis as well. image Also, am I the only one who finds it hard to believe there's still pre-1981 cases that still EXIST?? After all, there were very few to no card stores back then; who would've thought to save whole cases over the years?

And yes, pics of your cases would be most welcome. image Even the cheap ones like 1987 and 1989 Topps. image

    Good one ZEF.

I made a very prudent buy in 1989. I bought a vending case of
'89 Topps Baseball. I heard about this Ken Griffey Jr. guy and I got the bright idea of buying the case and thinking I would make a killing on it once he got to be great. He did become a great player. Only problem was, he's not in the case. He's in the update set. I didn't know this before I pulled the trigger. I figured since he was in Upper Deck foil boxes, he would also be in Topps' regular issue.

At least it was only a $200 loss. I now use the case as a base to support a few other banker's boxes in a storage closet here.

I've lost so much money on new products, boxes, cases, etc.... that I stopped buying any newly issued cards in 1995. It was the best decision I ever made in the hobby.

My only two older wax boxes are a '77 Topps Basketball box and a pretty scarce '70 Topps Super FB wax box. These are buried here so I won't be tempted to open them. I also have a few cello's with stars and a couple of racks with stars too but nothing major. I would rather be able to see the cards, then keep them unopened.

I've got a case of '88 Donruss. Even without adjusting for inflation I've taken a huge loss on it.
I"ll stick to single packs of pre '79, and an unopened box of each heritage year.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

In the past couple years I have bought a 1979 BB Rack Case, a 1978T Hockey Wax Case and a 1983 OPC Hockey Wax Case -- all with the intention of storing them away for a few years at least. But then... on quiet nights when there's not much going on in the house, if you listen carefully you can hear little voices calling from the card room that these cards must be free'd from their dusty confines. One by one these cases somehow lost their seal and then I had to bust at least a few boxes. Then the bills come and you have to sell a few more of the boxes to cover some of the cost, and then Steve at BBCE posts a new case that would look good sitting back in the card room again and the whole process starts over again. Hobby's (aka addictions) are tough things to break!
  • I have bought around 15 rack cases of 89 Fleer. To me and my limited $$ thats alot. Sometimes when I receive them I see the lot # and can safely assume it will have the Black Box version so I think of saving the case unopened. Well, the longest I have kept one unopened is a day or 2. Dont think I'll ever be able to keep one unopened. Now if I had a case of 88 Donruss...

You see, the reason I asked is because lots of people collect unopened packs/boxes, but I figured very few collected cases due to the expense and because it's not as "colorful" of a collectible.
