Agreed, overgraded or very poor scan. I saw that card on ebay too and wondered how the heck was that ever an 8. Looks like a solid 6 or low end 7. The bottom corners look awful. From the cert. number and font used on the label it looks like it was graded in 1998 or '99.
I still would love to own it in any grade 6 or higher. I just wouldn't pay up for this very weak sister looking 8.
My experience with 1957 Topps Basketball is that PSA overcompensates with their grading when they see a well centered card. To find a near perfect centered card is so difficult that, purposely or not, they tend to let some wear slide that ordinarily would be emphasized.
That is a great Russell, especially centering. If it were a different year the PSA 8 grade would surprise me more. Should it be this way - doesn't seem like it.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy! Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
If the card was in a SGC, GAI or BVG holder, then I would say yes, the card was over-graded. But because it resides in a PSA holder, the card is definitely not overgraded.
The strict 15-minute evaluation process each card undergoes by a battery of TRAINED and CERTIFIED professional graders at Professional Sports Authenticator ensues precise grading each and every time.
The other grading companies often times do not even employ actual human graders. I heard from sources that these companies just have a computer that randomly generates a number that spits out grades. For BGS modern cards, it's an automatic 9.0 or 9.5. For SGC, all vintage cards are graded a 3 or 4 unless you slip a $50 bill with your submission.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
