1951 Topps Team Cardinals - How can I remove the tape residue?

How can I get the tape residue off of this card without ruining it? It is otherwise very nice with only a tiny surface wrinkle on the right edge.

  • I've had some success soaking the card in Afta and gently rubbing it off with my finger. It takes quite a leap of faith to do this on an expensive card so I would practice on some 90 Donruss.

frank, if you're serious about removing the tape (and why wouldn't you be) and NOT damaging the card - do NOT do it yourself!!!

I can highly recommend the services of Matt Nelson, who is a comic conservator (as you might expect, many times comics are in need of unsightly tape removal.)

His website: Matt Nelson Classics Incorporated

Please contact him, if only for advice, before attempting anything yourself. Good luck!

Also, not to rip on rich's advice, but it's apples and oranges if you "practice" on something cheap, and then hope for the same results on the '51 card... different cardboard, different ink, different tape that's been there 50+ years. Definitely seek out Matt's services, since he can make things look practically untouched/original as they were before the tape, etc.

Basically a bad idea to try it, in my opinion.
