1983 Topps Rip, or did I get ripped?

I just opened 24 packs of 1983 topps cello packs of 28 cards each. No Gwynns, no Boggs, and only one Sandberg that was badly off centered. It seems most of the other hof'ers were badly off centered as well. Is this common to only get one of the three key cards in a box? I know I am going to hear I should have purchased off of bbcardexchange, might be a hard lesson learned.

It's all a crap shoot. Buying from BBCE just means that your stuff is legit and untampered. It doesn't mean that it's loaded.

  • Digicat,

I understand every box will not be loaded. This was the first box that I have ever ripped. I just wasn't sure if this was normal for how many cards there were. It was still a thrill to open the packs.

Even using BBCE, I've gotten bit by the bad-luck bug. I purchased 2 wax boxes of 1985 Fleer a while back. Pulled 1 Clemens and 1 Puckett, both very OC. Heh. For what I spent on those two boxes, I could have bought a 1985 Fleer factory set, and a PSA 9 Puckett and Clemens to go with it. Oh well.

A bit later, I bought a rack box of 1984 Topps, and pulled 3 Mattingly rookies. image

Sometimes you win some, sometimes you loose some.

Speaking of 1983 Topps, pull any nice Willie McGee rcs?

Oh yeah, 80s Topps in general has bad collation, so you might end up with 5 of the same card, and zero of others. Sometimes you get lucky and the card you got 5 of is the key rookie. More often than not, it'll be some common.

So true. Except why does it always seem like I got five Jose Morales cards to every one Rickey Henderson RC? Or seven Rob Wilfong's to one Ozzie Smith?? image

  • I bought a 1983 Topps vending box from BBCE a little over a year ago and Carl Yaz and Reggie Jackson were the only real star cards I pulled- no Gwynns, Boggs, Sandberg, Ripken, Henderson, etc. So I agree, it is a real crap shoot no matter who you buy from.

It sounds like bad luck since its probably hard to reseal cellos.

83 topps is definitely strange in terms of collation...not to throw salt in your wounds, but I bought 10 racks from Kruk's, and pulled 4 Boggs, 1 Gwynn, and 1 Sandberg. Unfortunately, I think the Sandberg is the only one that is a definite 9, all others no better than 8's. I'll find out soon, they are being subbed under the June special.
  • I once opened two wax boxes of 83 Topps straight from the case (ouch) pulled 1 Boggs RC & a couple Mcgee RC nothing else
as everyone else has said it's a crap shoot. Once watched a kid at my store spend 6.00 on an 86 donruss pack hoping to pull a
Canseco RC 80-100 bucks at the time, He got 2 Cansecos in the same pack talk about a happy camper, talk about a hot pack.
