Anybody up for a 1980 Topps Hockey Case Group Rip?? No, really??

Steve at BBCE has had a sealed case of 1980 Topps Hockey Wax Boxes (Gretzky's 2nd year) sitting for awhile now and I'd like a crack at ripping it but by no means have the funds. I have seen group rips on this forum and yes, I'm aware of the history of the last couple that the infamous Gary organized, so I go into this just to kick the tires and see if we may have enough takers if we do it the right way.

I've already contacted Steve and he is willing to send out the boxes directly from the case to you and he will take Paypal directly so I never touch either the cards or the money. I figure to keep it semi-easy for him though, we'd need to commit to either each person taking a minimum of half a box (18 packs) for $225 or a full box for $450. That price is delivered and includes all fees. Remember these are straight from his sealed case. Some of the pop reports intrigue me as most of the Gretzky cards have never achieved a PSA 10 and I just know there's got to be one or two lurking in this case. Here's the SMR:

No Description NMMT8 MT9 GEMMT10
3 Wayne Gretzky Record Breaker (HOF) 20 85 225
87 Wayne Gretzky All Star (HOF) 30 115 335
140 Ray Bourque (R) (HOF) 80 160 625
182 Wayne Gretzky Team Leader (HOF) 15 50 200
195 Mike Gartner (R) (HOF) 25 60 175
250 Wayne Gretzky (HOF) 50 125 825

And here are some of the pop reports;
#3 Gretzky - 139 submitted - 0 PSA 10's
#87 Gretzky - 361 submitted - 0 PSA 10's
#140 Bourque RC - 551 submitted - 2 PSA 10's
Gretzky Assist Ldr - 62 submitted - 0 PSA 10's
#182 Cklst - 116 submitted - 0 PSA 10's
#195 Gartner RC - 180 submitted - 1 PSA 10
#250 Gretzky - 679 submitted - 0 PSA 10's

Looks like it's a challenging case so I thought I'd put it to the group and see if anyone is interested. If so, let me know and if you'd be looking at a half box, full box, or multiple boxes. I told Steve we'd only do it if we can sell off the whole case so we need to cover 20 boxes. Anybody up for it?

I wonder if a group rip can be done again after what happened in the past?? Nothing against you personally, but I would be a little hesitant to get into a case rip with a member that has been on here for almost a year and only has 27 posts. JMHO. Again nothing against you personally.
  • Why are you questioning this group rip, all he has done is ask if anyone is interested in it. Steve from BBCE is going to do all of it.

Yeah, I knew going in that everyone is a bit gun shy and me being more of a "lurker" than a "poster" the only way people would possibly do this is to put it all in someones hands that you all trust and I know both personally and from reading countless other examples... it doesn't get any better than Steve. Either way it's obviously your call but we'll need quite a few takers if this is to happen.

I see that it is stated that Steve is going to send everything out, but who is going to collect the money?? I just question the overall chances of anyone wanting to do one again.
  • Did you read the original post prior to asking these questions?? Its says in original post Steve will take PayPal and collect the money.

Not a hockey collector but good luck with the rip!

I mentioned that in my original post as well that I don't touch the cards or the money as Steve would take paypal directly...all I am in this deal is one of the fellow rippers. Again, I understand the hesitancey after the past history, but if there's any safer way to do it than put it all in Steve's hands I'm open to ideas. I had a blast watching group rips in the past and it's a shame to let that go down the tubes because of one REALLY bad apple. My .02.

Stingray obviously did not read the entire original post very carefully.

It is my opinion that the original poster, knowing the past history with rips among board members here, has handled everything up to this point very well. image

Oops, did not see that, well based on that I could see some maybe doing this.

But the bigger question is: Who would collect the money?

If this is a baseball case I am IN for sure; if it's a football case I'll have to think it over (but I'll probably still make the plunge imageimage

Hard to tell who's going for sarcasm (we don't alot of that up here in Minnesota) and who hasn't read the post very carefully. Just in case people need the readers digest version:

1980-81 Topps Hockey Wax Box Rip
Full box of 36 packs for $450 delivered
Half box of 18 packs for $225 delivered
Case is sealed and contains 20 wax boxes in all
Steve at BBCE would collect all $$ via paypal and send directly from him to you
SMR and Pop reports in original post

It only happens if we can cover the full 20 box case. If interested, let me know so I can start a list.

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

I assumed sarcasm but sometimes you just never know and rather than offend someone I hit the highlights. By the way, Gary guaranteed to refund everyone's money from this rip if they fail to pull a Gretzky and Bourque. Still have no takers for this...nobody wants the challenge of landing the 1st PSA 10 Gretzky??

i cracked 3 case fresh boxes of this stuff. Should have the grades back any day.
The cards did not come out sharp and would be SHOCKED to have a 9 on gretzky or bourque.
Forget about getting a 10 on the #3 gretzky. The card comes in an avg centering of 90/10.

There is a reason why none of these cards have 10s.

I figured it would be tough based on the pop report but if we bust 20 boxes I would be hopeful that one of us would hit a big one. At this point it doesn't look like there are too many interested in it so I'll probably have to shelve the idea until I have an extra $9K to blow (aka never). Still if there are any takers I'm still willing to put a list together to get this done.

So I'm taking it this means nobody is interested? As I said, I expected some resistance but it's pretty sad if this part of the enjoyment of our hobby has to disappear due to a bad experience. If it's done right, I'd like to see the group rips continue but if Hockey is not for you guys I certainly understand. I'll let Steve know we won't be taking him up on his generous offer. If nothing else, Steve I thank you for continuing to be a class act and offering to take on the responsibility for this one.

I have nothing against doing another rip, especially if Steve does all the leg work.
I was one of many burned by Gary, and am just having some fun with it. Laughter is the best medicine, especially when you have been screwed.
I have never opened a pack of hockey cards in my life, but I hope you can put it together.
  • Im not sure why people are so worried about a rip. I set a hockey rip up right after some of you got ripped off and it went really well. Steve at BBCE sent everyone there cards in nice packaging and if memory serves as a group we pulled four Bossy rookies. If I understand the origional post of this thread all the money and shipping will be handled through BBCE so whats the worry??? Anyway just my two cents.

I just love the 1980 Topps football boxes. How many Joe Montans should there be in this case??????
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
I don't think there's much worry about a rip. I just don't think there's much demand on these boards for this particular product at that particular price.
