interesting........

I pulled a impulsive move by bidding on this Thaler tonight on Teletrade. Well, as luck would have it, it will be coming to join me soon.

After doing a quick scan of NGC's census, it appears they haven't ever slabbed one; PCGS has only slabbed this one, and i can't seem to even find the coin at all in my 1801-1900 Krause. Am i missing something? anyone have much info on this one (ie: mintage, etc)? i guess i should have done my research BEFORE i bid, but did i mention I can be impulsive? image

WOW that is an awesome coin. I think what you have here is a shooting medal/coin. Krause lists mintage at 12,000, CV of $110 in unc and $150 in BU. Personally, I would gladly pay much more for that one.

Would've been nice if they could've put it in the holder straight, no?

whoa, bonus score! i can add this to my (small) collection of Swiss Shooting Thalers! i put in a bid of $150, and got it for that; i think i'm satisfied with the buy.

c'mon man, doncha know they charge extra for misaligning the coin in the holder!? or maybe...........this is some rotated die Thaler, worth a bazillion dollars! image

    thanks for the info!

    Great coin.

Did you realign it digitally in the picture, or were you able to straighten it out?

They DID put it in there straight originally, but it "wandered" or "drifted". That happens sometimes.

You can straighten such a coin by carefully tapping the corner of it a certain way. Put a towel or something on the corner of a table or desk, and repeatedly tap the slab on it rapidly. You should notice some slight movement in the coin. Once you determine which direction it's moving in, you can alter directions by tapping the other corner. Just taptaptaptap until it's straight. It's a task for the patient, but I have done it several times.

Of course, there's nothing to prevent a "lazy coin" from wandering around in the holder again, but they tend to wander around slowly, so a couple taps should set it right if it starts to drift a little.

Dang it! you've runied my profit vehicle. I had a multi-billion dollar deal worked out with 3Mark, as he was convinced it was the ultra-rare "lazy die Thaler" image
yeah, thanks for the tip, i'll try tapping it around to get her back in order.

    thanks!

Actually, I think you got a deal on that piece. If the color is anything like the pics it looks quite original. With a mintage that small, methinks Krause is undervalued.

I guess I should be checking Teletrade more often... image

Very nice and worth more than the price paid... I wonder why PCGS labeled it as a Thaler? It is a Gulden and by ASW is about a 2/3 thaler for the time.

Second, I am looking at a Standard catolog of German coins (second edition) which is uhmmm? 8-9 years old? And lists it as 200.00 in UNC. I think you got a heck of a deal on that pretty nifty looking coin. Congrats on your find (and buy).
