Submission results: 1986 Topps Baseball

I just got this invoice back from PSA.

I Was obviously happy with the turnaround and the grades were close to what I expected. A few more 10s would've been nice, but I submitted some really tough cards (Gaff, Murray, Foster, Sandberg, HoJo, etc) and was happy to get 9s on them!

The nice thing is that four PSA 9s from the invoice brought me up to 100% in 9 or above for my Mets set!.

Another thing I like is that each card in my set is from my own submissions. Does anyone else care about things like that?

Robert

Nya, nya, nya, nya, nya! My last 1986 Topps submission landed me a Roger Clemens 10 that sold for $250! image

Sorry, I had to rub it in. Looks like you did pretty well. My last Bonds got me an 8! I was not happy!

nice work. you have a good eye for 10s. i've noticed you sell quite a few in the past.

i picked up an OPC box that has a few mets that do not appear on the regular 86 set.

    Thanks,

What service was used with 22 cards? Did you pay $13 a card or did you just do the minimum 25 cards and pay for 3 gradings that you did not submit? March spring training special special. Does PSA enforce the minimums on this type of service. ---Nice grades on your submission. CONGRATS on the 10's.

    Mickey71,

The invoice was 22 lines, but it was 25 cards. I submitted two Murrays and three Bonds'. This invoice was the March spring training special.

Congrats on the great 86T sub with all those 9's! i must've busted at least 10 rack cases looking for a Garvey card that i could submit that would grade at least PSA 9 and could never find one.

Is that really true? TEN CASES? I used to love Steve Garvey, but that's crazy! (not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Was sub# 67 yours too? That was a 200+ line of 1986 Topps from December. Nice job on the 10's. I can't believe what some of those 86T get in PSA 10. I saw a Rose go for >$300 a week or two ago. Crazy.

Yeah, i'm afraid it's true. (smaller size, 3-box rack cases though). Fortunately, there are no major rookie cards in the '86 Topps set so it wasn't as expensive as it might initially sound.

The best thing about my addiction (err....collecting habits) is that it allowed me to give my nephew an unexpected gift of 20 or so 800 count boxes of cards (he's about 10 years old or so and is just starting to get into cards). Most serious collectors don't care about late 80's card sets but it was a big deal for him to get so many cards that were printed 10 years before he was born. The look he had on his face was priceless.

    envoy98,

Yup, that 86T invoice is mine also. I've been harvesting them for quite awhile now. Here's a link to my set. More than 99% of the cards in my master set are from my own submissions. Needless to say, I've submitted a ton of these 86T cards!

    blue227,

The Garvey is definitely one of the real tough cards to find in PSA 9 quality. The best one I could find is the 8 in my set at the above link. I really think that mine could've been a 9 on another day.

I completely agree about the Garvey being a tough card from the 86T set.

Acknowledging that i am not familiar with the challenges in getting a 9 or higher for common cards from the 86T set (common = PSA pop < 5), IMO, the Garvey card is the 2nd toughest from the 86T set with the toughest being the Saberhagen rookie. I base this view on two key ratios derived from the current PSA pop.

The ratio of PSA 8's to the combined pop of PSA 9's+10's is 7:1 for Garvey and about 8.5 :1 for Saberhagen.

For a modern set from this era, the combined pop for 9's+10's is usually some multiple of the pop for 8's rather than the other way around.

The percentage of PSA 9's+10's to the total pop is 12% for the Garvey and 6% for the Saberhagen.

For sets from this era, this percentage is usually at least 50% for HOFs, stars and semi-stars.

Fortunately for me, there aren't too many other collectors interested in Garvey!
