1989-1994 OPC splurge.....

I just bought out a few ebay dealers of their unopened OPC stuff. These things are impossible to find, so when a deal came along I jumped all over it. I'm definitely going to be ripping some of it, but I just wanted to share some of the cool stuff I was able to pick up:

1986 Stickers box (x2)- OPC sticker boxes rarely show up and are fairly high in demand for what they are.
1988 Stickers box (x4)
1989 wax box (x2)- The Randy Johnson RC is by far his hardest issue in terms of quantity and condition. If I had to guestimate, I'd say the OPC print run in 1989-1991 was about 5% of Topps.
1991 set (x3)- Cool condition-sensitive set with Chipper's RC.
1992 wax case- This had by far the highest production run of all 90s OPC, but still was almost nothing compared to what Topps flooded the market with.
1993 vending box (x11)- 1993 was a fun year because OPC decided to create a design rather than just go with Topps'. The result is one of the best card designs in that era. They also decided on cutting the sheets with some type of sharpened blade instead of letting 90 year olds cut them with rusty scissors during an earthquake. I really like this set.
1994 wax box (x5)- This was the last OPC baseball issue, and it seemed like they were desperate- there were insert sets and redemption cards seeded at one per pack, and the design was a poor attempt at being modern with their whole marketing campaign being "borderless". I think the print run for this set was really really low, and they decided to get out of baseball for good after its release. Chipping on the edges was ridiculous- one of the most condition sensitive issues I've ever seen.
1994 set (x6)

If you look at the PSA pops, you'll find just about every star card has a PSA 10 pop of 1 or less. It's really insane to me that there's not more of a demand for this stuff because it's the only true rarity in an era of mass overproduction. I think as the player registries start to get more specialized, people are going to be looking to break this stuff for gradeable cards. I would imagine some will come out of the woodwork then, but I really don't think there's a lot of it around.

I think I'm going to sell some of it off and keep the rest. If anybody has been looking for any of the things I've bought, I'd be happy to give them first crack.

Lee if you want to go a little older I just bought some opc singles from a guy in canada who had some 80s boxes listed, I would give him a good reference.

Right now he has a box of 82, 85, and 86 for sale in his ebay store. link

I remember in the mid-late 1990s, KMart was full of '93 and '94 OPC wax. They carried a huge # of boxes at that time. I liked the OPC because even though the sets were smaller they were issued in springtime and actually pictured players in their current uniforms while Topps was so consumed with having their products in stores by Christmas that nothing was updated to reflect the current season. I don't think KMart sold many because they just weren't very popular here. I still have quite a few '93 stars.

Ah, that would explain the 14.99 big yellow price stickers on some of the 94 OPC boxes I bought. They were actually under shrink wrap, which is on top of the OPC factory shrink wrap. I guess they did this to avoid price sticker switching (ala "My Blue Heaven").

We had a few K-Mart's here in MD that never carried OPC products from what I can remember. In fact, I didstinctly remember a time in late 1993 when the '93 OPC set had all up arrows in Beckett, so I went to every local store that carried cards to look for them with no success. I don't think I ever even saw a '94 OPC box until my recent spending spree. Maybe it was a northern US thing?

  • OPC will take off someday. I still can't believe it gets no love based on sheer production numbers. I purchased 7 Gem Mint PSA 1980 Topps OPC commons for less than 45 bucks for the group. All 1/1. Load up the boat on OPC.

DA cards world has the 85 boxes for about 10 bucks cheaper - I bought one a few months back and it was pretty nice.

Thanks jimq. That guy is a little high on those boxes, but I'll keep an eye on whether they sell at those prices or not.

Did OPC, not counting Premier, make some sets with their own design and not just use the same as Topps?? What years where these??

Lee mentioned in his original post that the two years for which the OPC design was unique were 1993 and 1994.

Boo mentioned that I mentioned it earlier that they had unique designs in 1993 and 1994.

Also, most of the OPC sets had unique cards that weren't available in their Topps counterparts. Examples would be the 1992 Gary Carter Tribute set, 1982 Ozzie Smith on the Cardinals, and 1988 Delino DeShields RC. I was always hoping that DeShields would be great because this was his only card for 2 years and thought it could be valuable if he turned out to be a Rickey Henderson type player.

The '88 Stickers are a diamond in the rough because of all the sitcker/stickerback combinations. Not many player collectors have all the combinations in Topps, much less in OPC.

I'm always interested in finding out if there are any other '88 Brett Butler sticker variations I don't know about. So far for OPC I've got a blank back, Mark Langston back and Dale Murphy back. For '88 Topps stickers I've got a Keith Hernandez back, Mark McGwire back, Dale Murphy back and Ozzie Virgil back. I've never been able to confirm if Hernandez, McGwire and Virgil were issued in OPC, and if Langston was issued in Topps.

Lee - I saw this old thread on 90's OPC and just wondered whatever happened with your big stash of cards. Specifically the 93 and 94 OPC - did you ever get some graded and how did they turn out? Did you end up selling off any boxes from those years? I just ran into some 94 boxes and a little bit of 93 and was wondering?

    Thanks - Andrew

I ended up selling everything in an ebay auction, and a guy from these boards was the high bidder. The more and more low pop PSA 10s of stars depreciate, the less fulfilling it becomes to grade obscure 90s oddball cards. I still like the cards, but there's only so many 93 OPC vending and 94 OPC wax boxes you can break before it becomes monotonous. It was fun back in the day when you could get $50 for a PSA 10 Yount or Puckett, but now those cards are barely worth the grading fees. It was fun while it lasted though.
