Good example on how packs are a waste...

I went to the card shop today and bought a 2500 ct shoe box (to separate and organize my autographs and GU'ed). Also bought some more super thick top loaders for my Final Cuts. While at the card shop and watching the NFL draft, I decided to buy some packs since I haven't bought anything from that card shop in a LONG time. I bought 6 packs of 02 Flair MLB at $6.95/pack (Roughly spent $40). Ok, out of those 6 packs, I pulled this:

Which is the toughest non-numbered insert to pull (1:40 packs). Great pull you may say, but for the $40 I spent, there is one on Ebay for less than $13

So, a) it's not a card I collect and b) I could have gotten the card from Ebay and saved a bunch of $$$. Now you see why I stopped buying packs.

true, but had u pulled a card selling for $100 on ebay, youve made $60 if u decide to sell, so packs arent always a waste.

In My Opinion packs are FUN, which is why Im in the Hobby.....
Instead of losing $300 at the craps table I can buy $300 in packs and at LEAST have something to show for it........

Yes, when buying packs, you pay for the fun of openning them. After the packs are openned, the fun is gone and so is your money. Now you are forced to trade since most likely its nothing you want.

I only talked about work when SumoJoe kept bringing it up. SumoJoe always made snobbish comments and asked me questions over and over again. I ignore him and he keeps asking until I say something. Well, your opinion went a little farther than just about pack and box buying. You made your opinion toward me also. That's why it turned into this. DeBeef also posted his opinion, but it was strictly on pack and box buying alone. And if I posted an opinion about something, it would be strictly on the subject of the title, not the person posting it (unless its intended to be about the person such as references, bad trader, etc.).

Auto-don't feel bad...I did a whole box of Flair and got a Tim Salmon gray swatch jumbo jersey card, 2..yes 2 Bret Boone bat cards, an Edgardo Alfonzo jersey and a Craig Biggio jersey.

I'll be lucky to get $13 for all five of those cards.

autobilia: you probably haven't had the best of luck with packs and probably don't really like gambling. I can totally understand giving up on packs, especially if you haven't pulled anything. My suggestion to you is stop buying 3-6 packs and buy a box. That's the only way I ever seem to pull anything. Only time I pulled a good card out of a single pack was a 1998 spx basketball update pack (only 2 cards and both are RC's) I pulled a Carter #ed out of 2500 and sold it on ebay the same week for $680US (yea awhile back!) It was a $55US pack and well I was glad I got something in the first pack, the second pack had nothing!. Try a box and see your luck, more often you will get a nice auto, some RC's etc.

SlipKnot515, is probably more an oldschool pack opener and must remember opening packs in the day when all the best brands were under a buck a pack...ah those were the days....damn Upper deck! Pack opening is alot of fun, the excitement of opening a pack is something that many collectors love. Hey, just imagine you pulled something real nice out of one of those packs autobilia...you would be on the board saying wow, what a great pull! Don't write off packs, until all boxes become like Upper Deck ultimate (yea $150 a pack!) they will still be some fun at a low cost. If everything becomes like that overpriced crap, then I'd give up on packs totally and just buy off dealers and net auctions.

Did you get a bunch of miscut cards which was a little bigger than the rest? Got a Greg Maddux and Barry Zito that was miscut at the top which made it a little bigger than the other cards.

Well, I can't buy packs b/c the wshop we had in town closed down last summer. I buy on Ebay, for both my personal collection and trade bait. Then I trade off stuff that I don't want, for stuff I would want in my personal collection here. I spend maybe 20 a month on cards. Half is usually on Mateen Cleaves stuff(I'm the only one who collects him) and I have a ton of his rookies. With the rest of my cash I try to pick up rarer cards and multi colored cards. I used to buy 1-5 packs of Topps Series 1&2 BB when I would go in for supplies.

I only keep Final Cuts, multi-color patches (unique ones), vintage, autographs, and memorabilia. Selling just about everything else. Going back into Autographs and FULL memorabilia which was my primary hobby. Ditching cards for the most part.

It's fun and entertaining.....It's kinda like a game...if you get a High dollar Card then you win...if you dont then you lose...It's always fun to open packs of cards and get a card even if it isnt a card you collect...even if you do pull a card you dont collect there is a solution to it....trade it for a card you collect...

If no one wants it, then you stuck with it. Cards hasn't been fun for me for years. I do like sending my commons off to get signed. It's better than a pack of cards. It's cheaper and when you receive a response, you never know who it is until you open it. And whenever you open it, it's ALWAYS a keeper.

Now, that's fun and entertaining.
