Who here owns a website and who do you use to host it?

Maybe a little OT but I am curious what is the best way to create/host/launch a website.

I think most ISP providers will give it's customers' a certain amount of space for a homepage. I use RCN myself. The problem is, you're still using thier domain name in your URL. Is that what you're referring to when you mean "own" a website?

I use imageevent.com for my collection website, and serverlogistics.com for my work website hosting.
Image Event is a very easy way to get a decent, quick gallery of your collection.
If you go to Net 54 and click on the vintage links button at the top you'll see a list of collectors and their websites. I just went thru them all and found I consistantly liked what I saw of the image event ones. I think it's about $25. a year for 1500 images, and then a one time fee of 25. for each add'l 1500.
If you subscribe to vintagecardprices.com I think they are also working on image hosting, but am not positive.

I use godaddy.com, you buy your domain name (it's around $8.00 a year) and then you can either use their free hosting which is what I use for my trade site, its still yours i.e. www.yourname.com it just has an advertisement for godaddy at the top of each of your pages, or you can get one of their hosting plans which start around $5 a month.

isn't there some catch with godaddy, like you can't move the domain name to another host or something?

Not that I know of, but I've never had the need to move it to another hosting service.

I use freewebs, there's a free version and a paid version. I use the paid version of only $5 a month and it gives me a TON of space for all my pictures and no ads are on my page.

I generally used 1and1.com. We had our domain through godaddy for a while, but with 1and1, they offer free domain registration/renewal with all of their hosting packages. They're pretty inexpensive, too.

Register.com and godaddy.com

No complaints on either.

Edited to add both offer simple templates to start a website, just costs extra.

They are so easy to create that even a caveman could do it

Microsoft Office Live has free hosting and web templates. It's geared towards small business.

I'm also a big fan of Namecheap.com for cheap domains.

BTW I own 5 of the things (no - 6 I think)

Godaddy.com $5 bucks a month for basic 5 page site. I'm not finished but it easy so far.

I use trellix site builder from Earthlink. I don't really use it to make a web page but I use it to host my eBay images so I can provide larger images than the canned eBay photo hosting site allows. I pay $5 per month for a limited Earthlink account to maintain the service. I tried the one my current cable ISP offers but it's not user friendly.

I use gkg.net for registrations. Go Daddy is Ok as well. Network Solutions is a big rip off.

For hosting I use 8-95.com and a "reseller" account. I can host 20 domains for $25/month.

netfirms.com is almost as good, but alot cheaper.

Sorry - uneducated here. So if I purchase a domain name I can basically create this page as I see fit? Or do I have to purchase add-ons to do something like that. If I have a domain name can I create and email with said name too?

Any of the numerous providers noted above can set you
up with all of the features that you need/want.

If you have no design/html skills, you will need help with your
site from a professional. Otherwise, you will end up with a pile
of junk that does not deliver the results you hope for.

I use Globat to host my Thrill22.com website. I also use Microsoft FrontPage to create and upload my pages. I find Globat to be quite helpful, and reasonably priced.

The key, I think, is a professional looking design. A friend does the graphics on my page, and I think they really make the page look great. The HTML work is really quite easy, and FrontPage does it all for you.

I'd like to think my site is proof you can put together a great looking page while knowing next to nothing about HTML or web stuff in general.

I use my local isp for one site, network solutions for one and nameroute.com for several. I have been very happy with nameroute. They are CHEAP ($15/year for basic domain hosting) but actually reply to tech support emails, etc.... I am just too lazy to change my others over to nameroute but one of these days I will. I still use Front Page 98 to do my web work and ftp to upload it to the web.

I use ipowerweb for both of my web sites. It's about $100 a year per site, which includes domain registration.

Your domain name, eg "storm888.com", is just a unique address for your website. This can be purchased separately.

Your website is made up of a page or pages along with email, storage and bandwidth. This is sold as a hosting package.

Sometimes you can find packages that include domain name along with the hosting package.

For $4.95 amonth I have 500 megs at GEOCITY ( Yahoo )
