What would you do?

I just bought this Clemente on eBay. Now that it arrived, I noticed the white spot on his neck. As I look closer, it's actually a scuff mark on the card!

How could that get by PSA? The card can't be a 7 with the scuff mark, can it?

I don't blame the seller, they probably didn't even notice it.

What would you do - contact PSA? Would they do anything about it? Or is this just the risk you take buying on eBay?

Thanks for any thoughts -

Of course, buying on ebay is always a risk. Graded cards or raw.

I would send a scan to psa and see what they say before you send it to them.

From what I hear, PSA will only buy back graded cards from the original submitter.

    Zef,
They gave me vouchers on a card I once purchased on ebay. It had surface issues as well. It was about a year and a half ago. They may have changed their policy since then, I dunno

I sent an email to the seller, not to place any blame, just to let them know. Maybe they'll step up. If not I'll email PSA and see what they say. Funny, I can see how easy it would be to miss it, but now that I know it's there it looks HUGE!

Sometimes I wish each graded card would come with a list stating how many previous owners it had. Some cards like that probably get sold again and again from people trying to get rid of it because of what you stated.

I stated on another thread how a Gil Hodges 1961 PSA 9 NQ I bought had a nickle sized bad ink smudge on the back of the card. I bought it on ebay and got rid of it on ebay - I imagine that card has been passed around a lot.

I agree with emailing PSA and see what they have to say.

Have ya looked at it with a 10X loupe? How deep is the scuff?

Just a thought, is there any way that the card could have been a PSA 9 without the scuff, and they knocked it down a couple of grades because of it?

  • Probably not. Looks like some slight corner wear.

Perhaps someone just plain missed it.

Speaking for myself, if the holder doesn't look like it's been compromised, I wouldn't bother the seller with this. Certainly not his fault.

I would definitely hold PSA accountable though. I bought a PSA 9 '91 Desert Shield G. Maddox last year in which a large section of the card's surface had a defect in the paper. This "blotch" was probably on the card stock at the time of printing and was amazed that PSA didn't catch or allowed it get by based on their standard of permitting a "minor" print defect. The only problem was, this was not a "minor" defect as it really detracted from the appearance of the card.

I would say they will probably say it is ok for a NM card to have minor surface issues. I have many cards that have slight surfaces issues and most are in lower grade holders, but a few are in PSA 7 holders as well. Tough call.

The scuff looks like what a quick swipe with sandpaper would look. It's a 7 because the corners are lightly touched - definitely not a 9 marked down by the scuff.

Seller's response - thinks it's on the holder, but if it's not sshhhhhhh...
