Very Quick Question From Newbie PSA submitter

I haven't been able to get an answer yet from the folks at PSA, but I am confused on one element of submissions.
On their 'how to submit' section, they give the impression that they prefer cards be put in a mylar penny sleeve and THEN into a CardSaver.
But the impression I'm getting (from various sources) is that it's not necessary to put the card into a penny sleeve first.
What does PSA prefer?
Thanks in advance for your advice...

  • Either or is fine. What PSA prefers most is to cash the check that comes along with the cards............

It depend on the value of your cards. Cards can get very small surface scratches if they bounce around, even in the card savers. the card sleeves gives them a little more firm grip. At a penny a piece or less for the sleeves, it could make all the difference between a 9 or a 10.It also gives the graders a little something to grab on to when the card is removed from the holder. that's my 2 pence worth. • I submit only using a Cardsaver I. Never had a problem.

It's for your own protection but it's not required. Keeps those fingers and thumbs off the card itself when removing it from the card saver. Hint - make a slight tear in the top edge of the sleeve on one side so your card won't catch a corner when inserting it into the sleeve.

  • Great idea regarding the 'slit.'
I was having trouble loading cards into the penny savers carefully. So i will try that (with commons, of course, just to test).
    Thanks for all your replies.
I collect mostly OPC baseball 77-92 (being Canadian) so the card stock is prone to catching on penny sleeves.
As I said, I am new (thank you for the welcome) but I'm running an experiment to see if getting cards graded from Canada is even worth the cost.
With 'customs' costs and postal tax and extra postage cost to the U.S. and back, I'm wondering if it's even worth it. But that's what the 'experiment' is for. Will let all those interested know the results.

  • A couple of more quick newbie questions, if you folks are amenable to answering (which you seem to be):

Are Topps Big (1988-90) and Bowman (89) considered 'tall boy' oversized cards as far as PSA is concerned?

When you're putting down your 'declared value' on the submit form, do you put down the value of the 'raw card' rather than what it might be worth if it gets a certain grade?
I find this 'declared value' thing weird. I understand they have to cover their buts, but a card is only worth what someone is going to pay for it. Oh, and if the card I'm submitting doesn't have a SMR price, what value do I put?
Thanks again for your remarks, everyone.

No they are not tall boys. 1969-70 Basketball is a tall boy. The topps bigs etc. will fit in a regular holder like old bowmans and topps do.
