Tracking sales on ebay

For a while I thought it would be interesting to start tracking sets I have collected or cards I'm interested, but not in a hurry, to buy. I know it would be personal preference in terms of what exactly to note, but I wanted to see if anyone else did it, and get some feedback.

What exactly do you track? I'm thinking I will track the type of card (player, brand, year), of course, and then grade (if applicable), ending price, ending day/time, shipping amount, and number of bids.

I'm pretty sure there's someone on here that has some extensive numbers on the 1993 Finest refractors, but if anyone else does the same thing, or has any advice, please share.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

  • I have a spreadsheet for each of the sets that I collect. The spreadsheet has the list of cards in the set, which card(s) I have, their grades, any important notes like variations, my purchase price for each card, and shipping if applicable.

I also keep track of what cards sell for on eBay, and when they sell. I also watch other auction houses as well. It's really a major pain keeping track of all the data, even though I only do it on about 3 sets. Even with 3 sets, it's still about 250 or so cards to track, and it's pretty ridiculous. I'm thinking about stopping and using another means of tracking prices.

  • I track prices in '60 Topps in PSA 8.

I have a spreadsheet with every card listed. I have a column for "avg price" and then a column for "Sale 1", "Sale 2" etc for each sale on ebay. I enter "shipped price" to keep in consistent --- and don't include cards with qualifiers....

it works great ... It shows both the average price each card brings, as well as the ongoing trend from sale to sale.

Oh --- I also put in a "comment" for each cell that notates the date of each sale. That way I have the info if I need it.

It's only one set ... and still requires quite a bit of work as several PSA 8's have ended auctions every night....

... but it's saved me a ton of money in not getting too crazy with emotional bidding, as well as allowed me to snag "deals" I may not have been looking for otherwise.

  • You might want to check vintagecardprices.com if your talking about vintage cards.
  • I have heard mostly good things about vintagecardprices.com, but haven't looked at it too closely yet. That's probably what I'll do. From what I've heard, it's not as thorough as having your own data, but it's much more convenient.

For pre-1990 cards vintagecardprices.com is definately the way to go. They not only track ebay but most major auctions.
