<< <i>We won't be able to know who's bidding on our own stuff??? >>
I don't have any auctions up so I am not sure , that would really suck , you get some clown bidding with awful feedback and you wouldn't know. I hope that is not the case.
Just reread the original announcement, it is in effect for items over $200
<< <i>So.... What does this change accomplish? >>
greater opportunity for shill bidding
How long a member
How many bids in last month
Total feedback
Bid retractions
I am guessing but the reason behind it may be by hiding the bidders name the seller cant say i know that bidder and how high he bids and run things up ,Or same for a fellow ebayer who runs someone up for the heck of it

<< <i>The little note on ebay claims it will keep outside forces from coming and offering up fake items to other bidders. This is terrible, now I'll never know how often korthjc beats me on Pete Rose stuff. >>
I would think you can still tell for the most part if you check his feedback page unless feedback will no longer let you see what item the feedback was left for, which I don't think is happening.

The registered memebers have credit card information with PSA already because that is how they paid for their memebership. We have our own discussion boards to police it for PSA. I think it is a great time for someone to start this.
BTW, if you click on the view complete bidder history you can figure out if the user has bid on multiple items from the same seller. Just a little more work for you.

<< <i>i dont think it is that bad. You can see a percent of the tiems that the biddder is bidding on the sllers items... >>
I buy raw cards almost exclusively from one seller. If you would see my % I would guess it's almost 95% from the same seller.

example-two cards are up for bid, you know your major competitor(s) need one and not the other. if you don't have unlimited funds you can snipe more on the competitive card and less on the one that your competitors don't need.
now under this system people can close their registries and have their bids hidden and no one will know what anyone has purchased.
hard to say if it will drive prices up or not
"I'd like to acknowledge the concerns we've heard from some members who believe these changes may encourage shill bidding (the act of using friends or alias User IDs to bid on a seller's own listing to artificially increase the bidding level.) First, let me make it very clear that shill bidding is not tolerated on eBay. Not only is this activity prohibited by our policies (read our shill bidding policy), it is also a crime in many states.
In addition to the Bid History changes I've described above which are designed to give buyers the information they need to feel confident, it's important to know that over the years, eBay has invested heavily in shill detection systems. We can proactively detect and investigate possible shill bidding scenarios with a higher rate of accuracy than ever before. These backend systems collect more information on selling and bidding activity than our Community has access to, so we can detect patterns and ascertain identities much more accurately.
Be assured that we will continue to monitor the sites where SMI has launched to ensure that increased shill bidding does not become an unintended consequence of SMI.
I want to thank the Community for the support you've shown for these changes thus far. While reducing transparency on the site is understandably controversial, I believe these changes strike the right balance between the need for openness and the need to protect our members from online threats."
I love the quote " invested heavily in shill detection systems", yet when serious bidders who are tired of watching 0 feedback bidders constantly crawling out from under the floor boards bidding on the same items over and over and report these people for FREE, they get sent the standard form letter stating "we can at this time find no blah blah blah" and let it continue until the bidders become NARU within a couple of weeks. Just another way to expand the "caveat emptor" blanket..........

Bidder #4 (current high-bidder) has bid on 17 auctions
in the past 30-days. ALL of those auctions were listed
by the instant seller.
As ZEF pointed out, some folks only/mostly bid with one
seller. Thus, it is not possible to say for sure that you
are being shilled.
But, the card is worth more than the current visible bid.
I was following this item and I can't believe how much is brought!
Wow.
I don't get that - how the heck can ya even have a chance to catch a shiller?
Edited to add: I also think this is a way for Ebay to INCREASE REVENUE! They WANT shilling to occur. Increase in ending auction values increase their fees! Ebay is becoming more and more evil by the day! Now, it will probably cost us all more to build our collections.
Say I'm deputy dog and I place a max bid of $50 when the item is at $10; d duck keeps bidding but my $50 max bid keeps outbidding him. Won't the bidding history look like this, giving the appearance d duck was shilling?
$50 - deputy dog
$45 - d duck
$40 - d duck
$30 - d duck
$20 - d duck
$11 - deputy dog
$10 - goofy

A chance of it...but should look at the sellers other auctions (and past auctions) also and see if there is a pattern before making that judgement.

I have bid just like duck hundreds of times.
I was NEVER shilling; I was just looking for the
dog's stop-out.
EBAY has had the ability to stop MOST shilling for
a very long time. It is not in their financial interest -
short term - to be proactive on the issue.
The new EBAY scheme is ONLY about stopping folks
from doing off-EBAY deals. It will make shilling more
prevalent, and harder for buyers to detect.
I do not agree that EBAY gives PSers a free-ride
on the issue. I personally know several PSers who
got tossed for shilling. (One was suspended for 90-days,
forfeited his 6,500+ FB account, and was allowed to start
over with a new ID at zero FB.)
The fact is that PSers are NOT the primary offenders.
They generally do NOT do it because they have too
much to lose if caught; and, most of them do not need
to shill.
