1982 Topps Blackless

I just got a batch of cards back from PSA and to my surprise I had two '82 George Brett blackless cards. I have #549 (PSA 8) and #201 (PSA 8 - OC). I had no idea until tonight how rare these cards are. Has anyone seen any of these sell? I saw a few on eBay a while back - but no Bretts. The two that I have are also from the "C" sheet which is apparently the most rare of the three sheets. Any feedback on these cards would be much appreciated.

Hi , congrats on your submissions. I checked and there are 2 #549 all graded 8. At card # 201 there is now a 6, an 8oc and an 8 . Hope that helps.

I have a few of the tougher "C" sheet 1982 Topps blackless cards. If anyone is interested in #400 Johnny Bench Graded PSA 7, #585 Rollie Fingers PSA 8, or #460 Jack Clark PSA 7 pm me and I'll send you a price.
I have a few from the "A" and "B" sheets also: #553 Dave Winfield All Star PSA 8, #684 Harold Baines PSA 8,

I guess I don't know much about the variations of these 82 Topps. Is the blackless on the back or the front? I am curious as to what one looks like.

The black is missing on the front of the card, the autograph is missing and also the black border. On the "In Action" cards the black border is missing. On some of the other cards like the All Star cards the players name and the border is missing. I have a Winfield All Star and also a Carew All Star like this. Then you have teams like the Phillies,Orioles and Pirates that have the position not showing at the lower left of the card due to the position normally showing in black for those teams.

Yes - I plan to list both of the Brett's after New Years. I also think I have the Jim Palmer IA and the Eddie Murray cards, but I was going to have them authenticated by PSA, as well.

Here are some examples of the Nolan Ryan and the Pete Rose "blackless" variation missing the facsimile signature and the thin black border around the picture.

I have the set done. The Cs are tough, but so are some of the Bs. The Henderson is real tough. Also Trammel. Getting Jack Morris in full blackless, as opposed to a partial gray signature is also hard. The Ryan is easier in this set than others. Rose too. The A cards showed up in NY. Some Bs too. The Cs seem to have showed up only in Michigan. I got most of my Cs from a guy there, although some from a guy in NY. Bobbsbbcards also has a set. I know two other guys who were close to finishing the set

I went through 2 vending cases (1000) cards and a complete set and the only thing that I came up with was this Foster card. Out of all the All Star cards this is the only one with and auto. Is this a common variety?

BTW, what does the abbreviation "NPO" satnd for?

Bunker, the Foster All Star cards with and without the autograph are common varieties. If the Foster that is missing the autograph was also missing the black border then you would have a blackless variation.
NPO may stand for No Position On Front. The #383 Pascual Perez error card has no position listed on the front of the card. Both the error and corrected #383 Perez cards are tough to find in high grade.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but the two George Brett cards that are labeled as blackless aren't blackless variations. If the Brett All Star card was blackless the players name/black border would be missing. The In Action Brett would be blackless if the black border wasn't there, but it clearly is there. It looks to me like the cards were mislabeled.

I checked Beckett's OPG for the Perez card and the picture they show for the error is this one:

I have 2 Perez cards and they both look like the one Beckett is showing so I am guessing Beckett is not showing the right error card. You said that:

Both the error and corrected #383 Perez cards are tough to find in high grade.

I feel like the one I have pictured here would be a solid 9 and maybe a 10 if the centering is ok. I didn't know that these were hard to get in high grade.

I tried to put up scans of my #383 Pascual Perez "No Position on Front" error and the corrected card showing the position on front but failed. I'll figure it out sooner or later.

Are these 1982 Topps Blackless worth anything? I just got back a Gary Carter All-Star in a PSA 8 and I did not even realize it was blackless. Any info would be appreciated.

The 2006 SCD Catalog lists it at $ 15 in top condition . A fanatical Carter collector might pay more since it is a relatively rare card. There are 396 blackless variation cards in the 1982 set. SCD lists the blackless '"set" for $ 5,500. In my experience in putting together the set, if you can find them all, you might have to put out that much

They come from sheets A, B and C from the regular 1982 set, probably in runs where the black ink ran out or was left out. Most likely the latter since gray signatures can also be found. The C and B cards seem the scarcest and for awhile it was said the Cs were scarcest. It seems less clear now.

I got most of my Cs from a collector in Michigan who said they showed up in packs there. I got most of my As and Bs from a couple of guys in NY, who likewise say they got them from packs. The Ryan is tough because of demand, but the Henderson is really tough. The Morris is very tough to find with no black as opposed to gray signatures.

There is a guy zenithium on ebay who has been collecting and selling them for years. He has recently had lots of 50 listed on ebay for $ 895 and I saw he sold at least one of them. In his offerings he has more info on them. Check current listings under Topps Blackless, and if nothing pops up, try same in completed listings

Yes, he does # 95, and it is an A sheet card, so it is relatively less scarce than some of the others. You might contact Zenithium on ebay to see if he has an extra one
