Holy isht... that borders in exploitation... seriously.
Also, it's probably a total and complete lie. My assertion toward that is the seller's mention of a Nigerian "scammer" winning the unit in a previous auction, but if you look at their auction history you'll see they've only sold off one other unit (also mentioned in the current auction) to a US-based buyer that they left POSITIVE feedback for. There are no other completed listings from the seller of a PS3.
If one aspect of the story is false, then it's a good bet the whole thing is a sham.
Being someone that writes about the games industry for a living, I'm not surprised they're tacking a sob story onto the auction. eBay prices have plummeted in the past few weeks due to an increase in supply, unfavorable reviews of launch software, and people giving up on the concept of snagging one before the holiday. In November, PS3s were going for as high as $10,000 each with the typical seller getting about $3,000 for their $600 outlay. That number soon fell to $2,000 and now rests somewhere around $1,000 under good circumstances. If a seller can realize an extra hundred dollars or more by linking a sob story to the listing, it certainly makes sense they'd try to do so in order to make a larger profit.
Ok, Im thinking if you dont have enough money to pay the rent, eat, buy clothes, then maybe buying Platstations for the kids shouldnt be high on your list of priorities.
What would be the point of a Nigerian scam artist buying one anyway? What would the scam be?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
Do you see these poor babies to the left here? Well they both have a severe case of diaper rash that needs immediate medical attention, but due to my family's financial situation we are unable to get them the help that they need. So if anybody out there is willing to pay 100% over the SMR for any of this crap below it will be greatly appreciated. Please, please, please help them because they are in dire straights unable to now sit for barely more than a minute at a time! Happy Holidays.

I wonder if I print out the pictures of Santa and the kids and take them to work if someone knows who they are? I work in Bluffton Indiana. It's a nice town, not too big. But there are around 500-600 people at work at night there, so I bet someone knows who they might be. There is around 1200 total that work there. Maybe I can just print the auction and post it up somewhere.
Looking at this seller's past & current listings, only a grand total of two auctions show up. Both for PS3s - This one closed earlier this week to a bidder in WV with a 99.6% FB rating over 1600 transactions. While it's certainly not impossible, I have my doubts that this guy is the "Nigerian scam artist" they referenced in their later auction.
In their later auction, they said "The only thing that we're lacking is the money to make the move happen and to provide a good Christmas for our children." So let me get this straight. . .they (and their family) have $1270 available in hand to buy the two PS3s (paid cold cash money no less) and that's not enough to pay for a U-Haul truck and Xmas presents???? How much stuff do they have and what do they define as a "good Christmas"?
It also struck me as VERY odd that the first auction went for $1000 - and then the second listing went up to $1200. I have to believe they figured they found one sucker willing to cough up a grand for their story, why not see if they can find someone even more stupid.
It also strikes me as very odd that the first PS3 they auctioned off made absolutely no mention of their dire straits. I mean the first auction began on 12/7 and the second auction began on 12/11. Must have been a very rough 4 days.
My son was born 10/23 and was in the hospital for his first 10 days, came home for 2 weeks and had to go back to the hospital where he's been since. His issues aren't really life threatening, but even so he probably won't be home for Christmas. You can imagine how much sympathy I have for these folks.
Absolutely unbelieveable, and shameless. Last thing I would be doing if I was in that bad of shape, would be standing outside a Wal-Mart waiting for a video game. I'd be looking for a job.
Of course, the story is a fabrication, but it shows you how little thought went into it.
I'm not rich or poor...I make 75k a year, but in the end I'd love for someone to hand me more money. Let me know if you need to do a good deed because your dying soon.
Where are they getting the money and time to find people all the free stuff you get for bidding at certain levels? It seems odd to tugg on one's heart strings and then at the same time print a list of free stuff you get for different levels of bidding. It almost reads like a PBS fund drive where you get a "Civil War" DVD set for every donation over $100.

<< <i>What would be the point of a Nigerian scam artist buying one anyway? What would the scam be? >>
All the Nigerian scams are the same. They're doing it with cars, racecars, snowmobiles, cameras, everything. The one I was involved with (sting at the Post Office) went like this.
I had a 71 camaro Z28 listed on ebay. It was at $18K with 5 days left and I got the email. He will pay me $25K for the car if I will end the auction early. Also he needs to have it shipped so he will add $5K for shipping, and he owes the shipper another $4K. He will send me a cashier's check for the whole $34K and actually include another $3K for me for all my time and patience. His partner at the bank in Nigeria happens to speak English and verifies that of course the check is good.
When the guy comes for the car, I give him the car and the $9K the buyer owes him.
3-4 months later I find out that the check was no good. Now his partner has my Z28 (worth about $30K) and I also gave them $9000 in cash! I'm out my car and my money and I have nothing!
In our case the guy who came for the car met the Postal Inspector and he was arrested. He gave up his partner who also was a USA citizen pretending to be from Nigeria.
In this case the guy would ship the PS, pay for shipping, and have nothing once it's gone.

Telling a sob story and pasting pictures of your kids for sympathy?
Or telling no story and just placing the product in front of your daughter's rack?
