Another seller ASKING for feedback first...

I won an auction recently and here is a note I just got:

Hi Jordan,

I received your payment for the ********** and will ship
the order out on Monday 10/23/06. Your FedEx tracking number (which
shows your estimated delivery date) will be activated overnight the day
your order is shipped: 123456789

Thank you for your purchase! It was a pleasure doing business with you.
Please leave feedback for me after your order arrives. That lets me know
that you satisfactorily received your package and will complete this
excellent transaction. Good feedback is more precious than gold! Thanks
in advance for mine!

Jerry

p.s. For added security, if you keep tabs on the FedEx tracking number
provided, you will know the day that the package is scanned and put on
your local delivery truck (at 4-6AM) and can either have someone be at
home or have a neighbor watch for the white FedEx truck and take
possession of the package for you.

He has not left me feedback. I paid via Paypal right after the auction end. It just pisses me off that he won't leave feedback first. Here is my response I just sent.

Jerry-

Could you leave me feedback now as I lived up to my end of the deal and paid ASAP? As you said, feedback is more precious than gold and since I lived up to my side I think I deserve it now.

I will let you know if any problems arise but since you asked for feedback, I feel I should as well. Let me know your thoughts on this and if I don't hear back from you I WILL NOT post + feedback first.

Have a good day.

Jordan

Or, you get the occasional note stating the same ... PLEASE post positive feedback as I have already left positve feedback for you ... and they never do. I just stopped posting for them anymore.

Since he asked for it, I see no reason why not to ask for it back.

I never ever left a neg or a neutral to anyone (looking back, there were situations when I should have just blasted away), but there were times I did not leave feedback. This case would be one of them. I do not need a seller to remind me about leaving feedback when my ebay experience is several years old and have always left postive feedback with the few times of no feedback.

    Zef204,

It seems like this guy is holding feedback hostage. It gives him leverage in case you don't like his service. I can understand withholding feedback for a newbie (some arguments can legitimize this practice), but you have made so many transactions already. He should worry about dealing faithfully to you and not worry about you keeping up your end, which you did within a day anyway.

I never ask for feedback because feedback is a privledge, not a right. I just consider it poor taste to do so just like one who works in a tipping kind of occupation should never ask or expect a tip from anyone. Again, it's a privledge, not a right, and should always be treated as such.

  • Are we getting into this debate yet again?

    Bottom line:
    Feedback is optional
How/when you ask for it is a personal choice
If you want to leave it or not is a personal choice

As a seller, I always leave it right after a buyer pays.... but that's just me. If another seller wants to wait, that's their choice. If I decide not to ever give someone feedback, that's my choice.

I really do not believe there is a "wrong" or "right" on this issue --- do what you feel comfortable with and be content with what others feel comfortable with. (so long as blackmail or extortion isn't happening) ....

That's my two cents -- but the rightousness on these boards defending both sides of this argument is just silly to me. FEEDBACK IS OPTIONAL AND A PERSONAL CHOICE --- nothing more.

Obligation for the seller is to leave feedback upon payment.

Obligation for the buyer when the goods are in their hands.

  • I know this is one buyer I will not leave feedback for until I recieve positive feedback of course I will have to be PAID FIRST Have filed a NPB
claim against him seems to be bidding on about 30 to 40 items a day and then only pays for the ones that he decides he really wants!

    Bid away

Gretch2663 is another stellar seller who not only doesn't leave feedback first and also will send nasty
emails in response to my comments about feedback. I added this guy to my "Never buy" from again. He
informs me that I was added to his blocked bidder list.image

Two thumbs down for this turd.

  • As for leaving feedback I always leave positive feedback when I am paid promptly (within 7 to 10 days) and hope the buyer leaves me feedback
occasionally I will email and say "Thank you for your quick payment and I have left you feedback upon recieving your item please leave feedback or just email me to let me know you have recieved the item" . 99% of all items I ship have Delivery confirmation on them, so I can check to see if it was delivered, I just wish that buyers and sellers would try to work things out as mistakes do happen and items & checks do get lost occasionally in the mail or ups, before going ballastic with negitive feedback.
I personally think feedback is over rated because you are only as good as your last deal. Just MOO

Just FYI my ebay ID is mike_felts

I got repeated feedback requests from a seller once in which the seller's attitude was as if the only reason he and I were making a transaction on ebay was to get feedback. I, too, think it is optional and not a big deal.

This debate again? Think of it like a tennis match.
    Seller lists
    Buyer wins
    Seller invoices
    Buyer pays
    Seller sends
    Buyer receives

I don't consider the transaction complete until the buyer is satisfied. At this point, which of either the buyer or the seller knows if the buyer is satisfied? Obviously only the buyer. By leaving feedback the buyer would be indicating to the seller that he is happy with the transaction. As a seller, I don't leave feedback until the buyer has indicated that he has received the goods, and they are correct. Once I sent out an incorrect card. I wouldn't consider that a completed transaction, so then neither of us should have left feedback until I had the chance to correct it. Neither do I mind leaving feedback without receiving it. Sometimes buyers will send me an email saying they got it, but not leave FB for some reason, and I'll leave FB based on that. But why would the buyer, in possession of the goods, not leave FB? Taht has yet to be sufficiently explained. Would such a buyer be afraid of a negative from a buyer who obviously was satisfied with payment?

Finally, why should the buyer give up the one bullet he has in his gun in a worst-case scenario? The buyer has both the item and feedback to leave. You get payment, send something out, and leave feedback, what if the buyer falsely claims non-receipt or leaves you a neg just because you make a mistake or he's a jerk and things weren't better than he hoped they'd be, which isn't impossible. The threat not only of retaliation but also a way for you to impart information about the buyer isn't worthless.

And for the record, between my buying and selling accounts I've received 2617 positives (0 neg) and left 2936 (1 neutral).

Holding FB hostage kind of bothers me.

But, I also don't care for guys that don't leave FB after I did.

I was going to write a long-winded post attempting to explain my side to this neverending debate. Alas, Mike has summed it perfectly in twenty words. image

We've gone over this so many times that this is one area where I know my mind:

Sellers should leave feedback upon payment unless there is reason to suspect the buyer. The fact that the buyer breathes and has two legs is not reason enough for suspicion.

The buyer should leave feedback upon receiving the item.

Anything short of that is bullcrap nonsense.

It's nice to see big opinions on an issue where strong arguments have clearly been constructed for the other side.

The world runs more smoothly when the buyer leaves feedback first. Think about it.

Great, wish I had known that before I would have cancelled his bid and sold to the next highest bidder. If you know any of his current ID's a PM
    would be greatly appreciated.

I got a negative feedback from someone 2 months after I purchased the card (and 1 month after I left him a negative). He sent me somebody else's card and didn't respond to 2 emails about it.

Of course, in the negative he left he claimed that he had emailed me and called me a moron.

Considering that he had an unresponded-to negative sitting on his record for a month before he left a follow-up, I think he only made matters worse for himself.
