Steiner Sports-What a JOKE!!!! Aaron Autograph Signing

I took my son Saturday to the mall to meet Hank Aaron to celebrate his 7th birthday. He has been reading books about Hank and collecting his cards. He was at " hall of heros " a Steiner sports store. While in line for the autograph, they (steiner) asked me if I wanted to pay 5 dollars for a certificate/holgram sticker to verify it was a real Aaron signature.Since I was already paying 175 for his autograph on a 16x20 photo, I though what the hell its only 5 more dollars. This is the first autograph I have ever paid for in nearly 30 years of collecting.
Anyway, after the photo was signed by Hank Aaron, I was told to go over to the other side of the mall, across from the store, where a young kid stuck a sticker on the photo. It seems to me that for 5 dollars I could have presented any item to them, that I brought with me and had them put there offical sticker on it. I couldnt believe that they where not set up next to Hank, and put the sticker on seconds after it was signed.

So to all autograph buyers out there-beware-even a steiner sticker is worth nothing!!!!!

  • Happy to say I just got him through the mail for free! And you are correct. The person should have been sitting at the table with him and doing it right after he signed. On a side note I can't believe they actually charge extra for that service. Did they at least kiss you before they bent you over?? image

I received no kiss-I did it for my little guy-I hate the idea of paying for an autograph. Scott

BWfan-A lot of times, Aarons wife will sign for him. She has been doing it apparently for over 20+ years, so much so that her Hank sigs are usually authenticated as legitimate. Just a little 411. BTW, could you pm the address? I would love to get a Hammerin Hank auto.

Steiner sucks. Aaron's autograph was in the $60 - $75 range before they got their greedy mitts on him. It's nauseating what they charge these days for an autograph. Once enough people saw how much money there was to be made in this hobby, everything started going to hell - the same place some of these dealers are headed when they cash their chips in. image
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • I know that it stinks to pay that kind of cash for an autograph, but guys like Hank didn't make that much in their playing days and deserve to capitalize on their careers and achievements now that the money is there. Heck, Aaron deserves its probably more than any of the players in today's game.

I understand this logic, but guys like Aaron, Mays, etc. are more well off than we think. We won't be needing to send them donations any time soon. And the autograph prices for modern day players, guys like Bonds, fuggedaboudit.

So if you are saying mine is bogus why would you want one for yourself??
  • BW-It's not proven that Aarons wife signs(besides Hammerin hank saying it himself a few times), but I'd like one for my autograph collection. I didn't say your auto is bogus, just telling you that it's quite a possibility. I don't sell any auto I get ttm, those are for my personal collection.

I thought that the fact I am from Milwaukee might have hit a soft spot with him but who knows. Plus his TTM average is about 25% so if his wife was doing it why not sign more than that??
And as far as I'm concerned Carew4me has proven himself to be a classless a hole who should put his brain in gear before spouting off his stupid comments next time.

I think your auto is real.

If his wife is signing? She's got his style down perfect.

  • I'm thinking the same thing Mike. Looks pretty damn good to me.
  • Well, BWfan I'm only going on what I've read in a couple publications(Beckett for one; although it was a few years back) and what I've heard. Thank you for the address, question though, does Hammering Hank charge or want a donation to a charity? Thanks, and I wasn't trying to knock your auto down I was just telling you what I've heard before.

Let me say this ... when my son is 7 and if he has been learning about an all time great such as Aaron, I will gladly pay the 175 to take my son and meet him.

Hopefully you got a pic of Hank and the boy.

My 10 year old doesn't understand the hold the game has over me, just like some may not understand why a father would drop $175 on their child.

That's what dad's do. We spoil our kids and drive our wives nuts. What more are we good for?
  • The auto I got was totally free of charge as I am not aware of any charity he would be part of or want money for. I'm not upset and I appreciate the info. Another one I got back which is most likely signed by a spouse is Don Zimmerman. I guess his wife does a lot of that for him.

I did get a picture with my son and hank aaron-hank was in a great mood-he looked up and asked "did you get a picture"-overall it was a great experience-I was just amazed at the freedom between the time the photo was signed and the sticker was placed on the photo-very bad planning on steiners part.
